Job description

About Scribd, Inc.

Scribd, Inc. is dedicated to advancing human understanding through four major products: Scribd®, Slideshare®, Everand™, and Fable. These platforms collectively support billions worldwide in progressing from mere access to gaining insight, practical skills, and expertise.

Company Culture

At Scribd, Inc., the workplace is characterized by authenticity and boldness, encouraging open debates and committed actions despite uncertainties. The company values individual flexibility balanced with meaningful community connections. Through the Scribd Flex initiative, employees can select work styles and locations that enhance their best performance, while still participating in planned in-person events to foster teamwork and company culture. Attendance in person occasionally is expected for all staff, regardless of location.

Our Hiring Philosophy

Scribd seeks candidates who exhibit "GRIT," a combination of passion and persistence aimed at long-term objectives. This concept also serves as a practical guide for working at Scribd: setting and achieving Goals, delivering Results in one’s role, contributing Innovative ideas and solutions, and enriching the Team through collaboration and positive attitude.

The Team and Role

The Core team manages the Scribd reading experience and its revenue generation, focusing primarily on the Doc Page—central to subscription and advertisement income. Cross-functional squads work closely with engineers, designers, and product managers. Effective communication both live and asynchronously is critical. The team not only builds new features but also leads the implementation of a new Brand Design System.

We are looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to develop cutting-edge frontend components for our upcoming web products. Collaborating with Machine Learning/AI and backend teams, you will contribute to AI/LLM-enhanced user experiences, write production-critical frontend code, define scalable architectural patterns, and work cross-functionally to ensure durable and practical technology improvements.

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Proven ownership mindset, taking responsibility for frontend systems from conception to long-term maintenance
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to design scalable frontend architectures
  • Pragmatic in balancing ideal modernization with incremental and low-risk improvements
  • Excellent collaborative skills, comfortable partnering with both product and platform teams
  • Focused on maintainability, extensibility, and developer experience from a long-term perspective

Experience Requirements

  • Over six years of professional experience in frontend software development
  • Extensive knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and React framework
  • Experience working with Next.js or other modern web frameworks
  • Understanding of Microfrontend architectures, monorepos, or shared frontend platforms
  • Strong grasp of web performance tuning, bundling strategies, and optimization approaches
  • Proven experience collaborating with backend and platform teams to establish clean integration methods
  • Comfort operating in high-traffic, high-stakes environments with direct user impact
  • Familiar with working in codebases with shared design patterns and constraints and collaborating across teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, thriving in a remote, documentation-focused culture
  • Highly collaborative, working closely with product, design, and backend teams to deliver comprehensive features

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience managing or migrating extensive, complex, or legacy frontend codebases
  • Track record of modernizing production frontend systems beyond greenfield projects
  • Perspective that views frontend architecture as a product serving other engineers, not just a delivery tool
  • Commitment to performance, accessibility, SEO, quality, and observability as fundamental priorities
  • Investment in testing and quality control practices that ensure safe, repeatable large-scale migrations
  • Passion for resolving complexity and improving existing systems
  • Consideration for technical decisions’ impact on both developers and end users

Compensation and Location

The compensation package includes base salary, competitive equity ownership, and a comprehensive benefits offering. Salaries are determined by local labor market benchmarks, experience, skills, education, and organizational factors. For Canadian locations like Toronto (where this position is based), the salary range generally spans from CAD 157,500 to CAD 201,000.

Eligible employees must reside in or near select cities across the United States, Canada, or Mexico, including Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver among Canadian options.

Employee Benefits

  • Flexible work modality through Scribd Flex
  • Full health, dental, and vision insurance coverage
  • Support for mental health and disability
  • Generous paid leave including vacation, sick days, holidays, winter break, volunteer time, and sabbaticals
  • Paid parental leave and family assistance programs
  • Retirement matching and employee equity participation
  • Opportunities for professional development and learning
  • Wellness and home office stipends
  • Complimentary access to Scribd, Inc.’s suite of products
  • Access to enterprise-level AI tools

Inclusion and Accessibility

Scribd, Inc. is committed to fair employment practices regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other protected characteristics. The company welcomes diverse perspectives and encourages all qualified individuals to apply. The interview process is designed to be accessible, with accommodations available upon request.
