Senior Software Engineer - Backend/GraphQL

Job Overview

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead high-quality software development and innovation within Domain's Residential Consumer web teams. This role requires designing scalable, efficient front-end and back-end systems, writing and reviewing clean, maintainable code, and ensuring all solutions support Domain's broader strategy. The engineer will shape complex feature development and uphold frontend quality to solve customer challenges and enhance the website.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the full lifecycle of medium-scale projects including design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance and improvements.
• Develop solutions for intricate, loosely defined technical problems.
• Consistently produce and review clear, concise, well-tested, and understandable documentation and production-ready code.
• Utilize proficiency across multiple programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
• Efficiently diagnose and fix issues, balancing speed, quality, and technical debt.
• Apply security-focused thinking to code and code reviews to identify potential vulnerabilities.
• Contribute to domain-wide architecture, security protocols, and technology standards with a system-wide perspective.
• Design solutions prioritizing scalability, future needs, performance, maintainability, and security.
• Address system health and technical debt backlog for owned services collaboratively.
• Mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
• Drive team collaboration and alignment to ensure delivery of high-quality software solutions.
• Build deep understanding of products and business domains, working closely with product owners to align solutions with customer and business needs.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Expertise in at least one programming language and stack, with a strong preference for Node.js and TypeScript in backend development.
• Proven experience designing and managing GraphQL APIs encompassing schema design, resolvers, performance optimization, caching, observability, and versioning or deprecation.
• Hands-on experience with Apollo GraphQL including Apollo Server and related tools; familiarity with Apollo Federation is advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of synchronous and asynchronous patterns including REST, GraphQL APIs, and event-driven messaging.
• Experience operating GraphQL platforms supporting multiple teams, emphasizing reliability, performance, and developer experience.
• Familiarity with GraphQL frameworks such as Yoga and Apollo.
• Expertise in implementing GraphQL security measures such as query cost analysis, rate limiting, depth limiting, authentication, and authorization.
• Experience working with cloud technologies like AWS, Docker, and ECS; exposure to Kubernetes platforms is beneficial.
• Practical use of AI coding assistants to enhance development productivity and code quality.
• Experience designing software architectures built for high traffic and scalable websites.
• Understanding of DevOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code methodologies.
• Proficiency with containerization and cloud services such as DynamoDB and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
• Experience working effectively in Agile environments.
• Additional valuable skills include C# .NET, Python support for legacy services, and Apollo Federation or other schema composition strategies.

Desirable Additional Experience

• Hands-on experience with AWS platform.
• Experience integrating AI-assisted engineering workflows.
• Building and deploying AI/LLM production systems.
• Cloud platform certifications such as AWS certifications.
