Team and Role Overview
The Product Engineering team for Direct-2-Consumer is responsible for developing OTT Player SDKs (HLS and DASH) across 17 platforms including Android, Apple, Desktop, HWA, and STB. The Senior Software Engineer will contribute to building robust, scalable, and high-performance Android applications using Java/Kotlin and Jetpack Compose while focusing on delivering an exceptional playback experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with architects and product stakeholders to develop new product features.
- Promote and implement best practices for Player design and development.
- Work jointly with internal and external teams to design and enhance the Player SDK.
- Continuously evaluate personal work critically and pursue ongoing improvements.
- Maintain strong customer focus, responding positively to feedback from internal users such as testers, client app developers, and product managers to enhance playback quality.
- Take ownership of the full product lifecycle from concept to deployment, testing, adoption, and iterations.
- Prioritize operational excellence with a metrics-driven approach.
- Ensure engineering excellence through sound architecture and design principles, monitoring protocol specifications, and suggesting feature improvements.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- 4 to 8 years of experience in native Android development using Kotlin.
- Expertise in creating native Android applications and mobile solutions.
- Strong understanding of Android and TV architecture, media frameworks, media player APIs including EXO Player, Android SDK, Core Java, Android Studio IDE, Compose framework, Android debugger, and the Android Open Source Project.
- Attention to detail with an ability to identify performance optimization opportunities.
- Solid knowledge of Android components such as Activity, Services, Intent, Broadcast Receiver, Content Provider, and UI controls.
- Familiarity with web service integration using REST and JSON.
- Experience with DevOps/SRE practices including CI/CD pipelines, performance monitoring, and incident management.
- Strong fundamentals in computer science, including object-oriented design, algorithms, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
- Self-motivated and proactive with minimal supervision.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
