About Mercury
Mercury is a forward-thinking organisation that supplies energy and telecommunications services to more New Zealanders than any other provider. We lead in renewable energy initiatives and are committed to building a sustainable future. Our core purpose is to care for tomorrow by connecting people and places today, driving efforts to create a better future for our communities and the country.
Role Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Project Manager to oversee complex projects within Mercury's Generation asset portfolio, with a particular emphasis on electrical engineering workstreams. Projects in this portfolio include major transformer replacements, upgrades to protection and control systems, switchyard and plant infrastructure renewals, grid connection activities, and extensive asset replacement and enhancement programs spanning multiple years.
This dedicated role focuses on managing intricate electrical projects that involve operational, technical, commercial, and stakeholder complexities. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, mentor junior project managers, and influence project outcomes across multiple departments. The position demands collaboration across various domains such as high-voltage systems, generation plants, grid interfaces, outages, and operations to deliver outcomes that are safe, compliant, practical, and commercially viable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of complex and critical energy infrastructure projects throughout their full lifecycle within Mercury's generation portfolio.
- Foster a robust safety culture among project teams, contractors, and stakeholders promoting safety citizenship.
- Establish and maintain reliable relationships with internal and external parties to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Provide influential input on commercial, procurement, governance, and investment decisions linked to project execution.
- Mentor and support development of project professionals and contribute to continuous improvement within the project delivery function.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of five years’ experience managing complex projects involving significant scope, budget, safety, commercial, and operational factors.
- Proven leadership skills in guiding cross-functional teams and influencing diverse stakeholders to reach shared goals.
- Strong proficiency in project management disciplines including planning, delivery, risk management, change control, commercial oversight, and stakeholder engagement.
- Sound technical, commercial, and operational judgment balancing safety, quality, cost, and schedule priorities.
- Relevant qualifications in engineering, project management, a technical trade, or comparable practical experience.
- Electrical engineering background is highly preferred, especially experience with high-voltage systems, generation plant, protection and control, substations, switchgear, transformers, power systems, utilities, or other infrastructure-heavy environments.
Benefits and Perks
- Five additional days of annual leave under the MyDays program.
- One-time $400 tax-free payment for setting up a home office.
- Discounts on electricity and telecommunications services for Mercury customers.
- Inclusive workplace valuing unique talents and abilities.
- Annual salary reviews and excellent parental leave, with options to purchase extra leave.
- Career growth opportunities and resources associated with one of New Zealand’s largest multi-utility providers.
- Flexible work arrangements including trust and autonomy to work both onsite and from home.
- Discounted health insurance along with complimentary life and income protection insurance.
- Comprehensive wellbeing programs including up to $100 annual health check reimbursement and confidential assistance services.
- Gender affirmation and compassionate bereavement leave policies extending to loss of pets.
