Role Overview

As a Senior PHP Symfony Engineer, you will be primarily responsible for backend development within a mature Symfony platform handling marketing and revenue data for enterprise clients. The current system uses Symfony 6.1 and plans to upgrade to Symfony 7, alongside an Angular frontend and AI microservices in TypeScript and Python.

Responsibilities

  • Lead backend development of the Symfony core application, achieving autonomous delivery within 2-3 months.
  • Critically evaluate code from team members and AI tools, ensuring essential considerations are met.
  • Support upgrading the platform from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7 by addressing versioning and compatibility challenges.
  • Enhance system performance, scalability, and maintainability for safer new feature integration.
  • Collaborate across the Angular frontend, TypeScript, and Python AI services, coordinating with DevOps on backend-impacting changes.
  • Comprehend the Angular/TypeScript codebase despite a backend-focused role.
  • Analyze the broader effects of technical decisions throughout Symfony, Angular, and AI services and identify issues in both human-written and AI-generated code.
  • Question existing methods to discover improved solutions beyond completing tasks.
  • Deliver well-considered, maintainable solutions within a legacy code environment while maintaining steady progress.
  • Work independently with strong ownership while collaborating effectively in a remote, cross-functional team.
  • Adhere strictly to SOC 2, PII, and security protocols consistently.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including a minimum of 5 years focusing on PHP.
  • At least 7 years at expert-level PHP development.
  • 3+ years of advanced commercial experience with Symfony 6.x or 7; senior Laravel experience considered if transferable.
  • 4+ years advanced backend architecture, system design, and scalability experience.
  • 2+ years advanced experience critically working with AI development tools, reviewing and validating AI-generated code.
  • 5+ years advanced MySQL experience including database schema design and query optimization; equivalent relational DB experience may be accepted.
  • Minimum 1 year working knowledge of Angular/TypeScript; React or Vue with TypeScript also acceptable.
  • 3+ years advanced automated testing experience with PHPUnit or equivalent frameworks such as Pest.
  • At least 1 year intermediate experience with framework upgrades and legacy code modernization.
  • 2+ years intermediate AWS experience; Azure or GCP also considered.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English with strong remote communication skills.
  • Ability to operate on UK working hours.
  • Capability to successfully complete background checks and comply with data protection and PII standards.
  • Strong self-motivation to work autonomously after initial onboarding period while still collaborating effectively.
  • Hands-on engineering skills combined with architectural insight to understand system-wide impacts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years intermediate experience with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.
  • Basic knowledge of data warehousing technologies such as Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
  • Experience with both Azure and AWS cloud platforms.
  • Previous experience leading projects and mentoring fellow engineers.
