About the Role

The Department of Conservation (DOC) invites applications for the position of Senior Permissions Advisor based in Hokitika, West Coast, New Zealand. This is a permanent, full-time role focused on managing permissions related to activities on public conservation land or concerning protected wildlife, marine mammals, and marine reserves. The role is vital in ensuring all activities comply with relevant legislation and protect conservation values.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and support the management of permission applications, including conducting technical reviews and providing guidance to peers.
  • Engage in pre-application discussions and critically analyze complex application materials, preparing high-quality reports to inform final decisions.
  • Collaborate within an inclusive team environment to enhance procedural effectiveness and ensure professional output standards.
  • Develop and sustain productive relationships with diverse stakeholders, industries, and internal/external clients, delivering professional advice and support.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to convert assessment outcomes into professional-grade reports.
  • Effective communication skills that foster trust and relationship-building.
  • In-depth understanding of statutory requirements and the legislative framework applicable to conservation.
  • Familiarity with project management, particularly in driving process improvements.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills with proficiency in work planning to manage multiple simultaneous tasks efficiently.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with a background or familiarity with planning and legislative procedures.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in planning or regulatory work contexts.
  • Tertiary qualifications in environmental sciences, environmental protection, or a related discipline.
