Job Overview
Based in the Electrical Division's Edmonton facility, the Senior Painter role in the Steel Fabrication department involves painting raw steel platforms and diverse equipment. Reporting directly to the Manufacturing Supervisor, this position operates primarily on the day shift (Monday to Thursday, 5:30 am to 4:00 pm).
Key Responsibilities
- Apply paint coatings to raw steel platforms and varied products accurately and efficiently.
- Utilize overhead cranes or forklifts to maneuver platforms and equipment safely.
- Execute wet painting tasks adhering to safety and quality standards within prescribed timelines.
- Occasionally undertake general labor and cleaning as instructed by supervisors or leads.
- Maintain and clean painting equipment regularly as part of routine upkeep.
- Accurately document inspection results and paint usage in official records.
- Work up to 12-hour shifts and potentially a sixth working day (Saturday) when necessary.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- At least four years of experience with wet painting, sandblasting, and surface preparation techniques.
- Competent in basic mathematical calculations.
- Proficiency in operating airless and conventional paint spray systems with minimal defects.
- Knowledge of wet painting methods and proper mixing techniques, including two-part epoxy primers and polyurethane paints.
- Basic proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
- Experience with steel grit blasting equipment and basic maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively within small teams with limited supervision.
- Maintain cleanliness of workspaces, including disposing of paints and solvents properly and keeping floors clean throughout shifts.
- Capable of performing commercial-grade blast cleaning and using thickness gauges (wet and dry film) and profile gauges for anchor profile verification.
- Skillful in identifying and repairing paint finish defects such as runs, holidays, and orange peel.
- Basic troubleshooting skills for paint spraying equipment.
- Adherence to company procedures, safety protocols, and ISO standards.
Work Authorization and Conditions
This permanent role requires legal authorization to work in Canada at hiring. Sponsorship for immigration is generally unavailable except under exceptional business or legal circumstances.
- The work environment is safety sensitive, temperature-controlled with occasional outdoor duties.
- Personal protective equipment—including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, harnesses, and respirators—is mandatory as required.
- Tasks require working at heights up to 30 feet using ladders or lifts.
Physical Requirements
- Maintain balance and agility to avoid falls during physical activities like walking, standing, crouching, and stair navigation.
- Repeated bending at the waist and knees, and frequent use of arms and hands in various positions.
- Extended standing and walking distances between 50 to 300 feet with only occasional sitting.
- Regular stair climbing during shifts.
- Frequently work with arms above shoulder height and use force up to 50 lbs with upper limbs.
- Use of hand tools, including tin snips, hammers, and vibrating power tools, for prolonged durations with repeated actions.
