Job description
Overview
The Senior Occupational Therapist plays a key role in managing a specialized clinical team, delivering expert occupational therapy assessments and treatment to referred patients. This role includes supervising junior occupational therapists and therapy assistants within the team.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independently assess and treat patients referred for occupational therapy, implementing customized treatment plans drawing on specialized occupational therapy expertise.
- Communicate findings and progress to referring physicians and medical teams.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient therapy records and handle billing precisely.
- Monthly update of individual performance statistics.
- Adhere strictly to clinical and service standards, practicing within professional competence and seeking guidance as needed.
Secondary Responsibilities
Clinical
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and support occupational therapy involvement in case conferences.
- Contribute to reviewing and updating clinical protocols and standard operating procedures based on current evidence-based research.
- Participate in clinical education by helping develop and coordinate student occupational therapy training programs.
- Support initiation and involvement in clinical research projects related to the specialty workgroup.
Service
- Assist in preparing monthly workgroup performance reports and monitor key performance indicators like clinical quality, revenue, and productivity.
- Maintain and update therapy equipment inventories; assist with budgeting for equipment and supplies, including capex and operational budget planning.
- Help manage complaint resolution, ensure patient safety, and promote a safe workplace environment.
- Contribute to development, promotion, and marketing of new clinical services.
Staff Development
- Assist in orientation and supervision of new occupational therapy staff within the workgroup.
- Update induction materials and checklists for the team.
- Identify training needs, encourage wellness, and support the professional development of staff.
- Contribute to ongoing departmental training initiatives.
Other Contributions
- Continuously update professional knowledge and skills in occupational therapy.
- Deliver educational presentations internally and externally via talks, workshops, forums, and seminars.
- Network strategically within healthcare practitioners at Alexandra Hospital to enhance teamwork and patient care quality.
- Assist in managing projects assigned to the workgroup.
Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized institution.
- Postgraduate qualifications in a clinical specialty welcome.
- Minimum of 3 years relevant occupational therapy experience preferred.
- Full registration with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated supervisory and coaching competencies.
- Customer service and result-driven mindset.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Interest in clinical areas such as Geriatrics, Neurology, Orthopedics (including hand therapy), and Palliative Care.
- Proficient in IT skills including Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
