Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Manager for Technical Program Management to lead and grow a team of TPMs within our Engineering division. As the R&D PMO team is newly established, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the program management function at GitLab by overseeing TPMs who handle diverse product areas, collaborating with Product and Engineering leaders to align priorities and deliver top results for customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Technical Program Managers, providing ongoing feedback to support their growth and success.
- Partner with the Director of Technical Program Management and leadership in Product and Engineering to determine staffing needs and align TPM assignments with company objectives.
- Develop and uphold program management standards, including documentation, plans, reporting, and post-mortems, continuously refining processes for greater effectiveness.
- Define and implement a strategic vision for the Program Management function in line with company goals, and expand job frameworks, competency development frameworks (CDF), and hiring plans for TPMs.
- Build strong collaborative relationships across Engineering, Product, Security, and Go-To-Market teams.
- Identify risks, resolve conflicts, and remove barriers to ensure timely delivery of programs.
- Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for programs and personnel, holding teams accountable to commitments.
- Lead strategic planning efforts, influencing staffing allocations, project timelines, and cross-functional planning engagements.
- Exemplify leadership qualities aligned with GitLab’s CREDIT values and managerial standards.
Candidate Profile
- Previous experience managing teams and serving as an individual contributor TPM, preferably at a senior level.
- Strong skills in prioritization and effective delegation of tasks.
- Demonstrated success partnering with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience formulating and executing strategic development plans for teams.
- Ability to guide others in leading cross-functional, product-centered initiatives without direct authority.
- Capable of establishing trust and positioning the team as thought leaders and valued partners.
About Our Team
Our Technical Program Management group is newly formed within GitLab’s Engineering organization. We are establishing a centralized PMO focused on standardizing best practices and fostering professional growth among TPMs.
