Role Overview
As a hands-on Senior Engineering Manager, you will helm a vital platform team consisting of 7-12 engineers specializing in distributed systems that intersect identity, privacy, and data ownership. This role demands active technical leadership rather than mere project coordination. Your responsibilities include ensuring high-quality engineering execution aligned with product objectives by eliminating ambiguities before development, detecting architectural flaws early, and steering system design discussions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a cross-disciplinary engineering team developing a scalable, privacy-driven platform using TypeScript, Node.js, and React.
- Direct architecture decisions and maintain documentation through Architectural Decision Records (ADRs) and Request for Comments (RFC) processes.
- Serve as a proactive technical gatekeeper to identify and resolve complex challenges early.
- Collaborate with Product and Design teams to define technical vision and roadmap strategies.
- Recruit, mentor, and retain top engineering talent, creating advancement opportunities to Staff and Principal levels.
- Promote engineering best practices including clean architecture, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), observability, and performance optimization.
- Implement AI-supported development methods and foster a proactive engineering culture.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of five years managing engineering teams, with proven experience supervising other managers or senior engineers.
- Strong, practical expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, and cloud-native backend development, preferably on AWS.
- Demonstrable depth in system design leadership, capable of leading complex design sessions.
- Experience maintaining distributed systems at scale in live environments.
- Background in security-sensitive, regulated, or privacy-related fields like identity management, fintech, or compliance is highly valued.
- Comfortable working in startup or scale-up environments with ambiguous requirements, building solutions from foundational principles.
- Knowledge of modern AI engineering tools (e.g., Claude Code, LangChain, MCP) is an advantage.
- Must currently reside in Berlin or be willing to relocate.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual base salary between €130,000 and €140,000.
- 15% annual performance bonus.
