Job description
About the Role
Asana is pioneering AI Teammates—intelligent agents that function like actual users within the Asana platform and its integrated applications. These agents perform tasks such as bug triage, request responses, research, and drafting project briefs, operating seamlessly across workflows with persistent memory and context. Currently in beta with Fortune 500 clients, AI Teammates embody Asana's evolution from work tracking to actual work completion.
We seek a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Agent Orchestration team, responsible for building system integrations that enable Asana's AI to handle high-value enterprise workloads. You will guide a senior team of six engineers to architect foundational systems allowing AI agents to function smoothly across diverse customer environments while meeting stringent enterprise reliability and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and expand a team of ~6 senior engineers, defining the technical vision for integrating AI agents with enterprise systems.
- Design and implement agent capabilities, integrations, and specialized workflows that empower AI Teammates in enterprise contexts.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, and Data Science to set and execute strategic roadmap goals aligned with company priorities.
- Establish cross-team alignment on shared AI infrastructure, APIs, and development patterns.
- Enhance engineering velocity and promote adoption of AI-related coding tools.
- Attract and retain high-caliber engineering talent and contribute to wider organizational leadership within Asana AI.
Challenges
This role requires navigating a fast-evolving AI landscape, setting robust technical direction amid frequent changes in models, integration techniques, and enterprise needs. You will develop systems that interface with multiple external platforms, manage complex stateful processes, and maintain enterprise-grade reliability and security. You will also lead and nurture a team of senior engineers in a competitive talent market.
Candidate Profile
- Over 8 years in software engineering, including at least 4 years in engineering management roles.
- Strong enthusiasm for applied AI, large language models, and agentic systems.
- Expertise in systems integration and platform development with successful multi-environment connectivity.
- Proven track record in defining technical direction and building alignment across teams on shared systems.
- Skill in recruiting, developing, and retaining senior engineering professionals.
- Adept at working in ambiguous, zero-to-one product environments and driving clarity from complexity.
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration capabilities.
- Keen curiosity about AI and emerging technologies, leveraging these to improve product experience and decision-making.
Preferable Additional Experience
- Hands-on production experience with applied AI beyond prototype stages.
- Knowledge of agent capability frameworks including dynamic skill acquisition and tool integrations.
- Familiarity with contemporary protocols for agent-tool and agent-agent communication.
- Track record in boosting engineering throughput and adopting developer productivity tools such as AI coding assistants.
- Experience integrating deeply with major enterprise platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Salesforce.
- Proficiency with AI system monitoring and evaluation tools.
