Role Overview

As a Senior Engineer within the Data Platform team based in Toronto, you will be instrumental in designing and building the foundational systems that orchestrate data flow throughout the organization. Your responsibilities encompass developing and maintaining a unified data platform that ingests, processes, and delivers vast datasets powering Movable Ink's solutions. This role requires close collaboration with teams from engineering, analytics, and infrastructure to create scalable data ingestion pipelines and backend services integrating diverse data sources with a strong emphasis on reliability, governance, and high availability. You will help modernize legacy data pipelines to align with current architectures and promote unified data access across products and services. Your contributions will directly influence the advancement and sophistication of Movable Ink’s offerings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy data ingestion pipelines and supporting infrastructure.
  • Lead the migration of legacy data lifecycle workflows to a new platform ensuring uninterrupted service to existing data consumers.
  • Define and maintain Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for ingestion and data platforms, including dashboards and alerting systems to monitor performance metrics.
  • Develop adaptable data storage layers catering to transactional, analytical, and machine learning use cases.
  • Implement comprehensive monitoring, observability, and incident management for event-driven data pipelines and services.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, analytics, and ML teams to establish data contracts, functional requirements, and standards.
  • Create a semantic metadata framework to classify and tag data assets across products, enabling consistent data discovery, exposure protocols, and identification of cross-product reuse opportunities.
  • Design and implement a multi-tenant data model ensuring secure client data sharing and isolation aligned with regulatory and compliance mandates.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Profound knowledge of data governance concepts including quality assurance, data lineage, retention policies, and access controls.
  • Expertise with database backends distinguishing OLAP and OLTP systems and hands-on experience deploying data warehouse solutions like Databricks, ClickHouse, or Redshift in production environments.
  • Advanced SQL skills with proficiency in writing and optimizing complex queries.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect complex systems and identify foundational components adaptable to evolving business requirements and strategic roadmaps.
  • Experience in designing and maintaining data systems within cloud environments such as AWS or GCP, including multi-cloud contexts.
  • Competence with containerization and orchestration tools, notably Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Proven track record integrating legacy and modern system architectures using well-planned interfaces and migration approaches.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills facilitating design discussions, architectural documentation, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with Elixir programming for concurrent, fault-tolerant data services.
  • Preferred: Exposure to data pipeline and streaming platforms such as Airflow, Kafka, or Apache Flink.
  • Preferred: Direct experience with columnar or OLAP database technologies like Databricks or ClickHouse.
  • Experience managing infrastructure as code via tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

Compensation and Diversity Statement

The salary band for this position ranges from CAD 145,000 to CAD 185,000 annually, potentially augmented by performance bonuses. This compensation is complemented by comprehensive medical, financial, and other benefits. The final offer is calibrated based on expertise and relevant experience.
