Role Overview

We seek a Senior Director of Software Engineering with proven leadership skills to expand and enhance our engineering teams, facilitate delivery of impactful business results, and ensure high-caliber software on customer-oriented products and internal systems. This role encompasses managing a broad and diverse domain with multiple independent teams focused on various strategic and tactical objectives. Responsibilities include overseeing software architecture, design, development, testing, and maintenance to provide an exceptional customer experience while leading technical and people management functions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop leadership across the organization, cultivating a culture where leaders push creative boundaries to resolve impactful technical challenges.
• Manage senior engineering leaders who oversee teams delivering robust, scalable, stable, and cost-effective software solutions, while promoting engineering best practices.
• Ensure delivery of product roadmaps aligned with both commercial goals and engineering targets.
• Strategically position talent, build succession pipelines, and create leadership development opportunities.
• Promote continuous improvement by addressing departmental obstacles and supporting the company’s mission.
• Encourage advocacy and external communication, representing Fanatics at relevant public and industry events.
• Forge strong partnerships with internal stakeholders, collaborating on prioritization and product feature input.
• Raise the standard for operational excellence and motivate leaders to aim higher.
• Provide transparent progress updates with metrics to executives and stakeholders.
• Direct your domain’s strategic vision while influencing other domains, balancing strategy over day-to-day tactics.
• Leverage metrics and feedback to optimize developer experience and challenge the status quo.
• Guide leaders in setting long-term architectural and product innovation goals, pushing engineering creativity forward.
• Mentor talent throughout the organization and externally.
• Lead recruitment, assessment, and onboarding of diverse, skilled engineers and engineering leaders using data-driven approaches.
• Own and continuously improve the hiring knowledge base and pipelines.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of industry trends, products, feature sets, and roadmaps.
• Stay abreast of advancing software development technologies and trends.
• Be open to travel for company meetings, conferences, and team-building events as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Over 15 years of experience managing engineering teams with at least 10 years leading engineering leaders.
• Proven expert technologist capable of managing multiple teams while ensuring high-quality output.
• Ability to judiciously assess and advocate for resource allocation as appropriate.
• Strong communication skills for conveying complex technical topics to varied audiences including engineers, business leaders, and non-technical stakeholders.
• Proficiency with Agile methodologies and SCRUM frameworks.
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution capabilities.
• Strong report writing abilities with structured, coherent presentation of information.
• Adaptable agile mindset suited to a dynamic, fast-changing environment.
• Thrives in entrepreneurial, high-growth settings with rapidly shifting priorities and quick decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience within start-up or scale-up companies.
