About the Role

Join the Regulatory Planning, Performance & Improvement team at NZ Transport Agency to drive evidence-based regulatory performance for vehicle regulation. This position is responsible for turning complex operational and regulatory data into clear, actionable insights to guide decision-making and enhance regulatory delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategic perspective on regulatory sub-system performance and anticipate future trends.
  • Lead creation of insightful reports that explain current status, significance, and required actions.
  • Deliver timely, ready-to-use advice on risks, trends, emerging challenges, and trade-offs to support leadership decisions.
  • Conduct targeted performance monitoring, analysis, and reporting regularly.
  • Perform advanced analyses to shape regulatory responses, planning, assurance, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Design and refine dashboards, reporting packages, and other data visualization tools continuously.
  • Improve data collection, validation, and management processes to raise data quality and consistency.
  • Detect systemic risks, control gaps, and performance concerns and help coordinate appropriate interventions.
  • Manage high-impact information requests ensuring accurate and well-supported responses.
  • Build trusted advisory relationships with senior leaders, operational teams, and stakeholders.
  • Provide evidence-based, practical guidance to leadership and frontline units.
  • Support governance, committee, Ministerial, Official Information Act (OIA), and reporting obligations.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking an experienced professional with strong technical skills, curiosity, and sound judgement who can effectively handle complex or partial datasets and extract meaningful narratives. The candidate should be adept at developing collaborative relationships across various teams and be capable of translating technical data into clear recommendations for action.

  • Proven track record in supporting cross-team planning, prioritisation, or coordination.
  • Expertise in managing data quality and improving operational data integrity and accuracy.
  • Experience designing performance reports and dashboards tailored for senior and governance audiences.
  • Proficient in advanced data analysis and reporting tools capable of handling complex datasets.
  • Strong analytical aptitude to uncover trends, risks, and opportunities within data.
  • Skill in transforming data into strategic insights and actionable options for decision-makers.
  • Understanding of performance frameworks and assurance processes related to governance and oversight.
  • Experience in enhancing reporting standards, processes, or data maturity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities for conveying complex information to non-technical individuals through reports and presentations.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, sound judgement, and capacity to manage competing priorities efficiently.
  • Background in regulatory, government, or complex operational environments, or the willingness to quickly acquire this context.

The successful applicant will also demonstrate or be willing to develop knowledge of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, Te Reo Māori, and appreciate Te Tiriti o Waitangi’s relevance in public sector work.
