About the Role
As a Senior Data Analyst within Fisheries New Zealand's Fisheries Data Management team, you will play a vital part in ensuring the availability of accurate fisheries data to support research, policy development, regulatory compliance, and sustainable fisheries management. This permanent full-time position is based in Wellington City and offers a salary range between $88,748 and $120,365, depending on your skills and experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and develop fisheries research data repositories, including transforming raw observer data into organized, structured datasets.
- Take the lead on handling complex data requests and disseminations of information.
- Enhance data quality assurance, governance frameworks, and management practices.
- Collaborate closely with scientific experts and business stakeholders.
- Contribute to system upgrades and organizational change projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- Hold a relevant tertiary qualification such as in information management, data analytics, computer science, statistics, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience in data quality management, governance, and information oversight.
- Strong analytical skills paired with excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- Proven experience communicating complex data concepts effectively to stakeholders and converting data insights into actionable business outcomes.
- Experience working in cross-disciplinary teams and driving continuous improvement efforts.
- Proficiency managing and analyzing large, intricate datasets.
- Knowledge of New Zealand's fisheries sector is considered beneficial.
Technical Skills
- Familiarity with relational database management systems, particularly PostgreSQL.
- Proficient in SQL for data extraction, validation, and detailed analysis.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or comparable software.
- Advanced competency in Microsoft Excel including complex data analysis functions.
- Understanding of broader data management methodologies and database systems.

The Fisheries Data Management team is charged with the custodianship, organization, and accessibility of fisheries data supporting regulatory, research, and operational needs of Fisheries New Zealand. They engage closely with scientists, fisheries managers, researchers, and technology professionals to ensure data reliability and usability for informed decision-making. The team values collaboration, ongoing improvement, and sharing expertise.
