Located in Abu Dhabi, it operates high-tech facilities and integrates cutting-edge solutions such as genomics and biobanks to provide precise, preventive, and predictive medical care. The Senior Bioinformatician will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team supporting the Emirati Genome Program, a large-scale whole genome sequencing initiative. This position demands leadership in complex bioinformatics and human genetics analyses, introduction of novel tools and approaches, and contribution to scientific research and publications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive bioinformatics analyses on expansive human genomic data, particularly whole genome sequencing datasets.
- Conduct diverse genomic studies, including variant detection, genotype-phenotype correlation, population genetics, association and rare variant analyses, ancestry-focused and family-based genetic evaluations.
- Interpret genetic findings by integrating human genetics knowledge, population structure, clinical data, and scientific evidence.
- Critically evaluate dataset quality and analytic assumptions to maintain accuracy and reproducibility.
- Combine genomic, clinical, and phenotypic information to drive translational and clinically focused research.
- Develop, refine, and deploy bioinformatics pipelines and methodologies.
- Assess new technologies, datasets, and tools to enhance analytical capabilities and incorporate innovations.
- Work closely with peers across bioinformatics, science, clinical, and technical domains to meet collaborative research goals.
- Contribute to scientific manuscripts, technical documents, presentations, and conferences.
- Effectively communicate analytical strategies, findings, risks, assumptions, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical parties.
- Adhere to organizational policies, regulatory mandates, data governance, and scientific standards.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts to boost quality, efficiency, and scientific impact.
Qualifications and Experience
- PhD in fields like Bioinformatics, Human Genetics, Genomics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or a related area.
- Equivalent advanced education combined with pertinent experience may also be accepted.
- Extensive expertise in human genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, or biomedical data science with proven leadership on complex genomics projects.
- Experience handling large-scale genomic and whole genome sequencing datasets.
- Preference for candidates with a strong history of scientific publications.
- Proficiency with programming languages such as Python and/or R.
- Practical knowledge of bioinformatics software like PLINK, REGENIE, bcftools, VCFtools or similar tools.
- In-depth understanding of human genetics principles, population genomics, variant and genotype-phenotype analysis.
- Familiarity with clinical, phenotype, or longitudinal healthcare data is beneficial.
- Knowledge of healthcare data standards including OMOP, FHIR, and EHR-derived phenotypes is desirable.
- Experience incorporating machine learning, AI, or large language models in genomics is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication skills along with effective stakeholder management.
- Ability to function independently while contributing cooperatively to multidisciplinary teams.
