Role Overview

The Metadata Platform DB team at Celonis manages the entire Postgres ecosystem—from infrastructure and provisioning to the software layers above. We seek a mid to senior Backend Software Engineer with extensive Java experience to maintain and expand this ecosystem.

Team and Technologies

• The team handles Postgres provisioning and infrastructure-as-code, developing Java components as well as a Rust-based database proxy, schema management tooling, and a sharding solution fork.
• Technologies include Java, Postgres, Terraform, Go operators, Kubernetes containerization, and monitoring tools like Datadog.
• The platform is cloud-native, evolving from AWS and Azure dependencies toward a provider-agnostic architecture.

Responsibilities

• Own one or more Java-based components within the Postgres ecosystem, including newly integrated services.
• Collaborate closely with infrastructure-as-code teams to understand provisioning and operation of your components.
• Improve stability, performance, and security of owned systems.
• Maintain forks of open-source projects, deciding strategically when to merge or diverge from upstream.
• Work closely with handoff teams and downstream consumers to ensure smooth integrations.
• Document processes, architectural decisions, and concepts during transitions and product evolution.

Candidate Qualifications

• Proven professional Java development experience: minimum 3 years for mid-level roles, over 7 years preferred for senior positions.
• Familiarity with infrastructure and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies, comfortable working alongside or using tools like Terraform.
• Experience developing, deploying, and debugging applications in containerized environments such as Kubernetes and Docker/OCI.
• Knowledgeable about databases, especially Postgres, with insight into MVCC and concurrency from an application standpoint; experience with distributed systems is beneficial.
• Capability in writing and sustaining unit and integration tests.
• Effective communication skills in English and commitment to writing clean, maintainable code.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Rust or Go programming languages.
• Hands-on experience maintaining forks of open-source projects.
• Practical Terraform usage.
• Working knowledge of monitoring and log analysis tools such as Datadog.
• Familiarity with agentic coding aids like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex.
