Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Engineer at NovaLexi, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, you will architect and develop secure, multi-tenant backend services and APIs for a large-scale platform that meets enterprise and regulator-grade requirements. Utilizing AI-assisted development workflows, you will accelerate delivery while maintaining high-quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services along with the platform's GraphQL API.
• Develop data models for complex intellectual property lifecycle domains including patents, trademarks, renewals, and multi-jurisdictional regulations.
• Implement strict multi-tenant data isolation strategies and role-based access control (RBAC).
• Manage integrations with external systems such as ERP, CRM, and PTO APIs.
• Ensure performance, reliability, and secure operations including Single Sign-On (SSO), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), encryption, and maintain compliance with NCA controls and PDPL regulations.
• Leverage AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code) to quickly deliver features while building robust AI guardrails through code reviews, automated tests, and security validations.
• Analyze and address the demands of large-scale, multi-stakeholder programs focusing on scalability, availability, security, and integration complexity.
• Define engineering best practices, conduct code reviews, and provide mentorship to engineering peers.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by direct management.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 8 years of experience developing production backend systems with demonstrated success in enterprise or government-scale platforms handling high data volumes and numerous integrations.
• Strong ability to operate within the complexities of large enterprise and government projects including regulatory compliance and multifaceted stakeholder management.
• Extensive experience with modern backend frameworks, ideally Ruby on Rails.
• Proficiency using AI-driven development environments such as Claude Code, including setting up safety guardrails to ensure correctness and security.
• Expertise in relational database design with PostgreSQL and background job processing tools like Sidekiq.
• Solid experience designing GraphQL APIs focusing on schema design, resolver architecture, and performance, preferably with graphql-ruby, alongside secure authentication implementations (SSO, MFA).
• Proven history of delivering scalable, enterprise-grade multi-tenant SaaS solutions and managing their inherent complexities.
• Comfort working in fast-moving startup environments, capable of managing priorities, adhering to deadlines, and executing tasks with autonomy.
• Preferred experience in government or regulated sectors.
• Desirable familiarity with Google Cloud technologies such as Cloud Run in the me-central2 region.
• Domain knowledge in intellectual property or legal technology is an advantage.
• Preference for candidates fluent in both Arabic and English.
