Role Summary
As a Senior Backend Engineer within GitLab’s Platform Enablement team, you will focus on enhancing GitLab's deployment experience across various environments. Your work centers on two main areas: refining cloud-native deployment strategies and developing ephemeral environments that mirror production for better validation and testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop advanced tools and workflows to support both cloud-native and self-managed deployment environments.
- Drive the evolution of deployment guidance by defining component requirements, architecture patterns, scaling approaches, and deployment topologies.
- Enhance ephemeral, production-like environments to enable early-stage validation and reduce divergence between development, CI, and production stages.
- Collaborate across multiple domains including application, infrastructure, and platform teams to maintain consistent deployment artifacts and environment contracts from development through production.
- Work closely with teams focused on packaging, testing, delivery processes, and customer deployment guidance to ensure seamless integration.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive backend engineering experience, preferably working with Kubernetes-based systems, distributed platforms, or platform engineering.
- Proven background in deployment architecture, managing environments, and operating cloud-native systems.
- Ability to operate effectively at the intersection of developer workflows and production infrastructure.
- Strong systems thinking skills related to service dependencies, deployment models, and infrastructure abstraction.
- A cooperative and pragmatic mindset geared towards creating resilient and maintainable platform features.

The Deployment Environments team is dedicated to simplifying GitLab’s deployment and validation workflows across different stages and models, including development, continuous integration, and various deployment platforms. This team focuses on cloud-native guidance, ephemeral environments, and platform contracts that mitigate lifecycle inconsistencies.
