Job description

Overview

Xe is a global cross-border payments platform serving SMEs and consumers across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It facilitates currency conversion, holding, and international money transfers, with over 300 million users accessing currency information annually and more than 350,000 active users sending funds abroad. As part of its growth, Xe is redeveloping the core platform that powers corporate and consumer payments, supported by Euronet Worldwide.

Role Summary

We are looking for a senior back-end engineer who will take full ownership of critical backend systems—from API design and data modeling to implementation, production stability, and deployment. Your work will directly impact real money transfers, enabling features like multi-currency balance management, onboarding, KYC/KYB, payment initiation, foreign exchange, and settlement services. Daily work involves using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development and modernization efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and maintain backend services responsible for moving money and managing multi-currency balances across multiple domains such as onboarding, compliance (KYC/KYB), payments, FX, and settlements.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration including product, compliance, and operations teams to take projects from problem definition to launch.
  • Build and manage integrations with partner systems and settlement infrastructures crucial to your domain.
  • Ensure domain production health including reliability, monitoring, incident response, and on-call duties.
  • Conduct design reviews, steer technical strategies within your domain, and mentor mid-level engineers.
  • Leverage agentic coding tools (like Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) consistently throughout the software development lifecycle and drive modernization of legacy services alongside architects and team leads.

Qualifications

  • 6 to 10+ years of professional experience designing and delivering production backend services end-to-end.
  • Proficiency in backend programming, preferably with C#/.NET; experience with OOP languages like Java, Kotlin, or Go is also accepted.
  • Solid understanding of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests as part of development.
  • Regular practical usage of AI-based code generation and support tools across development stages.
  • Hands-on experience deploying production systems in AWS, including familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and use of services like SQS, DynamoDB, S3, ECS, and Lambda.
  • Strong background in system design and architecture, especially service-oriented or microservices and event-driven designs.
  • Relevant experience in payments, foreign exchange, or other regulated industries.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a technical capacity, including mentoring, leading design reviews, and influencing architecture decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Extras

  • Familiarity with ledger systems, double-entry accounting, or financial data architectures.
  • Experience recruiting, interviewing, or onboarding engineering talent.
  • History of leading platform modernization or migration initiatives.
  • Knowledge of caching technologies such as Memcached or Redis.
  • Competence with project management and documentation tools like Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience using API testing platforms like Postman or Bruno.
  • Proficiency in developing automated tests aided by AI tools (e.g., Claude Code).

Benefits and Perks

  • Paid leave on your birthday.
  • Additional annual leave accrued for each year of service, up to five extra days.
  • Contributions to KiwiSaver retirement plan above base salary.
  • Healthcare coverage.
  • Discounts on Euronet employee stock purchase plans.
  • Volunteering day annually for charity engagement.
  • Complimentary fruit, snacks, beverages, and coffee in the office.
  • Access to mental health and wellness support through Plumm.
