Job description

About the Role

We are collaborating with a prominent global technology company in Munich, Germany, to recruit a Senior or Principal AI Engineer focused on developing end-to-end autonomous driving models. This opportunity involves building single neural network driving models that learn the entirety of the driving task, processing sensor inputs to making driving decisions, rather than relying on the traditional modular system comprising separate perception, prediction, and planning stages. The role emphasizes engineering excellence to convert leading AI research into practical autonomous driving solutions capable of operating safely and reliably in complex real-world environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and enhance end-to-end driving models that generate driving commands from multiple sensor data inputs.
  • Advance state-of-the-art driving frameworks to strengthen robustness, safety, and adaptation for complex on-road scenarios.
  • Develop AI-driven risk assessment and safety mechanisms tailored to learned driving models.
  • Perform optimization of machine learning models leveraging extensive real-world and simulated datasets.
  • Assess model behavior during standard driving and evaluate safety-critical rare edge cases.
  • Work collaboratively with research and engineering teams to deliver AI systems ready for production deployment.
  • Keep abreast of the latest innovations in end-to-end driving systems, foundational AI models, Vision-Language-Action architectures, and autonomous vehicle AI.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant commercial experience developing end-to-end autonomous driving models where a single neural network controls driving decisions from sensor inputs such as cameras, LiDAR, or bird's-eye view representations.
  • Familiarity with modern techniques including behavior cloning, driving policy learning, trajectory generation, planning networks, or Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models.
  • Strong grasp of deep learning architectures including Transformers and multi-modal neural networks.
  • Experience in AI development for safety-critical autonomous driving applications.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++ programming.
  • Expertise in model evaluation, robustness testing, edge case analysis, and constraints for deployment in autonomous driving.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Professional fluency in English; knowledge of German or Chinese is advantageous.
  • Willingness to undertake international travel up to 25% of the time.

Why Join?

  • Contribute to some of the most sophisticated AI systems for autonomous driving worldwide.
  • Engage in groundbreaking end-to-end driving model development instead of traditional modular pipelines.
  • Tackle complex challenges regarding vehicle safety, robustness, and scalable deployment.
  • Collaborate with top-tier AI researchers and engineers in the autonomous vehicle domain.
  • Take responsibility for technologies that will shape future autonomous vehicle production systems.

Additional Information

This role specifically targets engineers who have extensive hands-on experience building or significantly contributing to end-to-end autonomous driving models where a single neural network maps sensor inputs directly to driving actions such as trajectories or vehicle controls. Candidates with experience limited to perception, SLAM, calibration, object detection, or individual driver assistance systems components without involvement in end-to-end driving model development are unlikely to meet the requirements. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate direct experience in designing, training, evaluating, or deploying learned driving systems.
