Job description
Role Overview
This position is responsible for the precise and prompt oversight of the company's financial accounts and reporting tasks. Duties include maintaining accurate financial records, completing month-end closures, analyzing revenue and expenditures, preparing reconciliations, supporting budgeting and forecasting, and ensuring all practices adhere to accounting standards, company policies, and statutory regulations. The Senior Accountant will partner closely with operational and commercial teams to deliver financial insights, reinforce controls, and guarantee accurate accounting of logistics operations.
Primary Duties
- Generate and assess monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements along with management reports.
- Execute month-end and year-end closing processes within established deadlines.
- Record journal entries, accruals, provisions, prepayments, and allocate costs accurately.
- Manage the general ledger to ensure all transactions are properly recorded and documented.
- Review balance-sheet accounts and address unresolved reconciliation issues.
- Assist with audit schedules preparation and fulfill requirements for internal and external audits.
- Confirm compliance with accounting standards, legal mandates, and organizational policies.
Revenue and Cost Management
- Verify revenue recognition to ensure income is documented correctly and in the appropriate accounting period.
- Validate operational expenses including transportation, warehousing, freight, customs, handling, subcontractor fees, and other logistics-related costs.
- Examine customer billing and supplier costs to detect unrecorded revenue, missing expenses, or profit inconsistencies.
- Track job profitability and investigate notable differences between expected and actual margins.
- Collaborate with operations and commercial teams to resolve issues related to billing, costing, and revenue recognition.
- Maintain correct accruals for pending jobs, received services not yet billed, and other liabilities.
Accounts Receivable and Payable Duties
- Evaluate customer and supplier account reconciliations and promptly address discrepancies.
- Oversee receivables, overdue accounts, and collections in coordination with credit-control and commercial departments.
- Review supplier invoices and payment records to confirm accuracy, proper approval, and contractual compliance.
- Assist in resolving disputes involving customer invoices and supplier charges.
- Ensure transactions are logged against appropriate customers, suppliers, cost centers, business units, and accounting periods.
Budgeting and Financial Analysis
- Aid in preparing annual budgets, periodic forecasts, and long-term financial strategies.
- Compare actual financial results against budgets, forecasts, and previous periods.
- Produce variance analyses covering revenue, gross profit, operating expenses, and working capital.
- Offer financial commentary and analysis to support strategic decision-making by management.
- Assist in profitability assessments segmented by customer, service line, branch, route, site, or project.
- Identify financial risks, cost-saving opportunities, and potential process improvements.
Compliance and Internal Controls
- Guarantee adherence to company financial policies, including delegation of authority and approval procedures.
- Maintain precise accounting records and related supporting documentation.
- Support VAT, corporate tax, and other statutory reporting as applicable.
- Monitor credit limits, payment terms, and financial control practices.
- Detect control shortcomings and suggest corrective measures.
- Contribute to the implementation and testing of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Possession of, or progress toward, a professional accounting certification such as ACCA, CMA, CPA, CIMA, or equivalent is advantageous.
- Minimum of five years in relevant accounting roles involving financial reporting and month-end closing activities.
- Experience in logistics, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing, shipping, supply chain management or related operational sectors is preferred.
- Strong understanding of accounting concepts, financial controls, and reporting standards.
- Familiarity with ERP and financial software like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics or equivalents, alongside advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with VAT, corporate tax, and other statutory compliances pertinent to the region is desirable.
