Role Summary
The Security Officer plays a critical role in safeguarding both guests and staff by actively monitoring and patrolling designated areas to maintain a secure environment, preventing loss or damage, foreseeing potential issues, and timely responding to incidents and emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Stay fully informed about all departmental policies, service protocols, and standards and adhere to them rigorously.
- Uphold high standards consistently each day in all safety and service aspects.
- Operate and maintain security equipment properly and use it strictly for intended purposes.
- Promptly anticipate and respond to guest needs, maintaining positive guest relations and acknowledging all guests warmly.
- Be knowledgeable about all hotel offerings, local attractions, and activities to accurately answer guest queries.
- Address and resolve guest complaints to their satisfaction.
- Ensure cleanliness, hygiene, and orderliness of assigned working areas.
- Maintain awareness of scheduled group events, hotel occupancy, facilities, operating hours, floor plans, fire and emergency plans, and departmental codes of conduct.
- Review daily logs and updates from previous shifts to remain informed on relevant details.
- Distribute radios, beepers, and keys to authorized internal guests.
- Keep precise records and ensure their secure handling.
- Verify identification of internal guests and escort all non-hotel personnel entering through staff entrances.
- Inspect packages, purses, and bags of internal guests entering or exiting the premises.
- Escort internal guests as needed and monitor after-hours access to secured hotel areas, ensuring proper authorization and documentation.
- Manage deliveries outside of normal business hours.
- Liaise with external agencies such as the police.
- Lead coordination during emergency situations and inform Security Manager immediately as required.
- Monitor security cameras and investigate any duress alarms.
- Patrol the property thoroughly using specified equipment, verify all checkpoints, and document activities taken.
- Identify and resolve safety hazards promptly.
- Ensure guest room doors are secured and assist guests with room access when necessary.
- Investigate suspicious individuals on hotel grounds.
- Conduct inquiries into thefts, lost property, noise disturbances, assault, food poisoning, and other complaints, completing required reports.
- Respond to accidents involving guests; provide first aid following Workers Compensation Board and CPR guidelines.
- Attend scenes involving guest fights or altercations.
- Handle situations involving intoxicated guests according to regulations and hotel procedures.
- Arrange towing of vehicles when necessary and document vehicle accident or theft reports.
- Assist with moving or securing guests’ personal belongings as needed.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all security-related documents and release information solely to authorized personnel.
- Answer departmental phone calls and communicate via radio or beeper with designated resort team members.
- Prepare and submit maintenance work orders to Engineering department.
- Perform any additional duties assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience as a Security Officer or in a similar role; prior hotel experience is advantageous.
- High school diploma required.
- Attention to detail, speed, and accuracy in job performance; ability to prioritize, organize, and follow through on tasks independently and within a team setting.
- Strong problem-solving, clear judgment, calmness under pressure, and good conflict resolution skills.
- Confidentiality of guest and hotel information must be maintained at all times.
- Valid Security License issued by the Province of British Columbia.
- Certified in Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA 2), CPR, and AED.
- Possess a Class 5 or higher British Columbia driver’s license with a clean driving record (maximum 3 demerit points in the past 5 years).
- Familiarity with Criminal Code, municipal bylaws, hotel layout, security policies, and hotel operating procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation including Occupational Health and Safety Act and Work Compensation Board of BC regulations.
- Fluency in English, including reading and writing; additional languages are a plus.
- Physical ability to handle lifting up to 50 pounds, perform various physical movements during shifts, and communicate effectively with guests and colleagues.
Additional Information
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada; the hotel cannot assist with work permits or visas.
- Hourly wage ranges from $21.95 to $24.58, based on experience and qualifications.
