Job description
Overview
The Safety Officer is responsible for establishing, promoting, and maintaining a safe, accident-free, and healthy working environment within the company.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate and ensure the regular and effective operation of the Health & Safety Committee.
- Maintain an efficient emergency preparedness system.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations as outlined in the Factories Act and Karnataka Factories Rules.
- Oversee the availability and inventory of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including purchase, issuance, and stock records.
- Ensure adherence to ISO and OSHAS 18001:2007 standards.
- Regularly review Workmen’s Compensation Insurance and plant safety records and suggest improvements.
- Conduct periodic health and safety audits and implement action plans accordingly.
- Facilitate ESH training sessions in alignment with the SHE Competency matrix.
- Carry out periodic safety inspections prioritizing severity.
- Provide EHS orientation, raise awareness, and update employees on safety trends.
- Perform risk analysis, mitigation, and prepare Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) reports.
- Engage employees actively in safety initiatives.
- Maintain and display records of incidents, accidents, and near misses, implementing preventive measures.
- Organize periodic fire-fighting mock drills.
- Develop and enforce work permits, policies, and procedures compliant with applicable regulations.
- Select appropriate safety equipment and conduct safety programs.
- Report on Environmental Management System performance and chair related management reviews for continuous improvement.
- Participate in accident investigations and assist in preparing materials for hearings, lawsuits, or insurance purposes.
- Compile and submit accident reports as required by regulatory bodies.
- Maintain statutory health and safety records and registers.
- Prepare and arrange safety exhibits and materials for promotional activities and industry events.
- Maintain safety files and documentation accurately.
- Facilitate safety meetings within departments.
- Coordinate scheduling and execution of third-party health and safety audits.
- Verify and monitor corrective actions arising from internal and external audits, ensuring continuous improvement.
- Maintain environment and health & safety records as per requirements.
- Ensure availability and readiness of first aid, ambulance services, and Occupational Health Centre (OHC).
- Monitor health and safety compliance of contract labor.
- Promote and implement safety initiatives across the factory horizontally.
- Drive the implementation of the EHS manual as per guidelines, ensuring safety KPIs (both leading and lagging indicators) are on track.
- Accept and perform any additional duties assigned by management as needed.
- Implement contractor safety protocols effectively.
- Oversee routine inspections, ensuring focused safety evaluations by Safety Executives.
- Ensure execution of Gemba walks in accordance with checklists and plans detailed in the SHE manual.

Qualifications and Skills Required
- Diploma in EHS Management, Diploma in Electrical Safety, or Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical or Electrical disciplines.
- Solid experience in the safety, health, and environment field, preferably including manufacturing settings.
- Minimum of four years of relevant experience in Safety, Health, and Environment roles.
- Proficient to moderately advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with willingness to achieve full proficiency.
