Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Scranton, PA. This role is responsible for ensuring worker safety on railroad tracks by managing train movements and adhering to federal safety regulations. The position involves supporting major railroads, regional lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and various contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate job site activities effectively.
  • Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
  • Conduct safety briefings prior to commencement of work.
  • Strictly follow and enforce all railroad, state, and federal safety rules and regulations.
  • Verify that contractors comply with mandatory training requirements.
  • Identify and address any violations of safety protocols.
  • Prepare detailed daily reports on work activities.
  • Ensure on-track safety in accordance with federal mandates.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • At least two years of relevant experience with Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad Suppliers, Contractors, or Consultants, especially within Maintenance Of Way (MOW) departments.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Citrix, email, phone, and texting apps.
  • Familiarity and comfort using Android tablets and smartphones.
  • Strong organizational skills with acute attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety principles.
  • Aptitude for developing and sustaining positive relationships with clients.
  • Willingness to travel extensively, potentially for months at a time (50%-85% travel expected).
  • Capability to complete all required federal, client, and company training programs.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is conducted primarily outdoors in field environments.
  • Must be fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Ability to travel or drive long distances regularly.
  • Physical endurance to stand for long durations and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision necessary.
  • Capability to work under harsh weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Comfort with noisy and dusty surroundings.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Compensation

The pay rate ranges from $25 to $37 per hour depending on experience.
