Job description

About planqc

planqc develops scalable quantum computers using neutral atom technology, recognized as a leading architecture poised for achieving practical quantum advantage. Founded in 2022 from MPQ and LMU Munich research, the company merges advanced atomic, molecular, and optical research with engineering to create reliable quantum computing platforms across hardware, firmware, software, and algorithm integration.

Role Overview

As a Quantum Algorithms Engineer on the Gate-Based Quantum Optimization Team, you will transform complex optimization problem solutions into executable quantum circuits optimized for planqc's processors. This role combines quantum algorithm research with high-quality software engineering to deliver robust implementations incorporated into planqc's quantum optimization library.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evaluate gate-based quantum algorithms focused on optimization challenges.
  • Translate theoretical algorithms into clean, maintainable production code within the quantum optimization library.
  • Investigate novel quantum algorithms that address classical optimization problems.
  • Develop scalable solutions for large-scale optimization tasks.
  • Implement quantum error mitigation and optimized compilation techniques to connect ideal algorithms with noisy quantum hardware.
  • Apply hardware-aware design principles to enhance algorithm performance on planqc’s quantum processors.
  • Collaborate closely with compilation, hardware, and applications teams to fully integrate your solutions into the computing platform.

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s or PhD degree in physics, computer science, mathematics, or related disciplines, or equivalent practical expertise.
  • Substantial experience in professional software engineering with a strong emphasis on code quality.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages typical for quantum software development, especially Python.
  • In-depth knowledge of quantum computing concepts, including gate-based quantum circuits and algorithms.
  • Familiarity with quantum compilation, circuit optimization, or hardware-conscious algorithm design.
  • Experience working collaboratively within version-controlled software engineering environments.
  • Fluent in English; German language proficiency is not required.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with quantum optimization algorithms applicable in both variational and fault-tolerant contexts.
  • History of contributing to large-scale software projects, such as open source contributions or multidisciplinary industrial collaborations.
  • Background in classical optimization methods or operations research.
  • Knowledge or experience with neutral atom quantum computing platforms.

Why Join planqc

  • Opportunity to work at the forefront of neutral atom quantum hardware development with a passionate, interdisciplinary international team.
  • Engage directly with significant ownership and influence over quantum system development from the start.
  • Be part of a dynamic, rapidly expanding quantum technology startup during a pivotal phase.

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours and option for hybrid work when applicable.
  • Company pension scheme including employer contributions.
  • Health and wellness benefits including access to gym, pool, and studio memberships, plus dedicated health days.
  • Bike leasing program available through the company.
  • Opportunities for continuous learning, including training, conference participation, and internal knowledge sharing.
  • Support for international hires with relocation assistance and visa facilitation.
  • Multiple office locations in Garching, Munich, Ulm, and Innsbruck.
  • Active team culture with regular social events and company celebrations throughout the year.
