Job description

Job Overview

This role involves precise and thorough quantity takeoff and measurement for both planned and completed structural and architectural construction activities. The engineer will generate detailed measurement sheets and supporting calculations for monthly payment requests, collaborate with consultant engineers and subcontractors in joint measurements, and ensure material deliveries and executed quantities align with approved construction documents.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accurately quantify earthworks, concrete (plain and reinforced), blockwork, and interior/exterior finishes using approved shop drawings.
  • Create and regularly update systematic measurement sheets categorized by BOQ item numbers, execution sites, grids, levels, and room identifiers.
  • Compare quantities from approved IFC drawings with the contractual Bill of Quantities; report discrepancies or variations to the assigned engineer promptly.
  • Conduct consistent site visits daily or weekly to inspect and record completed works.
  • Verify subcontractors' executed quantities, ensuring no duplication of previously certified or paid work.
  • Prepare comparison drawings contrasting actual site conditions with approved plans, and document As-Built measurements.
  • Compile comprehensive measurement documentation to support monthly payment applications, including sketches, photos, and approved Work Inspection Requests.
  • Review subcontractors' quantity measurements for accuracy and deduct amounts for incomplete or non-compliant work.
  • Assist cost engineering and departmental leadership by providing verified quantity data for periodic payment calculations.
  • Validate material delivery notes, such as Ready-Mix Concrete tickets and steel invoices, against engineering calculations and Bar Bending Schedules.
  • Monitor and record preliminary material wastage, reporting unjustified usages to Site Engineer and Technical Office Manager.
  • Measure additional or revised works arising from site instructions, focusing only on quantity measurement without pricing.
  • Produce sketches illustrating design versus actual executed works to support Variation or Change Orders preparation.
  • Maintain organized archives of measurement sheets and marked drawings in both physical and electronic formats.

Educational Background & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or an allied engineering field is required.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture may be considered if focused on finishing works quantity takeoff.
  • Possession of valid professional registration with the relevant engineering council, such as the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE), at an appropriate classification.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of practical experience in quantity surveying, technical office activities, and site measurements within construction projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret architectural and structural construction drawings accurately.

Technical & Software Proficiencies

  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD for efficient extraction of dimensions, areas, and quantities from drawings.
  • Competent with digital quantity takeoff tools like PlanSwift or Bluebeam Revu.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Revit, including reading BIM models and extracting schedule data.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel for developing formulas, conditional formatting, and preparing standardized measurement sheets.
  • Strong grasp of engineering measurement principles such as deductions for structural elements and accurate net quantity calculations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to analyze complex drawings and numerical data critically.
  • Capability to detect and report discrepancies between planned drawings, site conditions, and measured quantities.
