Product Engineer

Role Overview

Wellio is seeking an experienced Engineer to join their Product Team. As a primarily bootstrapped company funded by customer trust, Wellio tackles complex problems in student wellbeing that schools typically cannot manage independently. The team values rapid iteration alongside maintaining high-quality code standards.

Technology Stack and Philosophy

The company is firmly committed to Ruby on Rails, currently operating on Ruby 4.0.7 and Rails 8.1.3.1, favoring tools that align with "the Rails way" but open to other suitable technologies where they provide better solutions.

Inspired by product approaches from firms like 37signals, Linear, and Airbnb, Wellio follows the Shape Up methodology. The team structure prioritizes small, senior groups embracing constraints, focusing intensely on craftsmanship, and aiming for impactful results.

Team and Collaboration

The product team is compact and senior-level, including the CTO, two senior product engineers, a designer, and the Head of Product. Close collaboration with co-founders and customer-facing teams ensures coding efforts directly address practical customer needs.

The ideal candidate offers extensive Ruby on Rails expertise paired with a passion for delivering meaningful products. They are motivated by challenging technical puzzles and are customer-centric in their approach. They value quality code but pragmatically acknowledge the trade-offs necessary in a startup environment.

Wellio seeks developers who counteract the "grumpy engineer" stereotype by showing curiosity, creativity, and solution-oriented thinking. The engineer should readily explore how to implement requests, seeking pragmatic compromises that align business goals with technical feasibility.

Additionally, proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools is important to maximize efficiency in a small, agile team.

Applicants should be based anywhere in Australia. Wellio maintains offices in Melbourne and Sydney, though the role is fully remote.
