Job description
About the Role
Wellio is seeking a skilled Engineer to join our Product Team. We're a primarily bootstrapped organization funded by our customers, focused on developing impactful solutions for schools that solve unique challenges. We prioritize releasing features rapidly while maintaining high-quality code standards.
Technical Environment
Our platform is built using Ruby on Rails, which we consider essential for our rapid development approach. We adhere closely to the Rails conventions but remain open to adopting alternative tools when beneficial. Currently, our stack includes Ruby 4.0.7 and Rails 8.1.3.1.
Product Philosophy
Inspired by companies such as 37signals, Linear, and Airbnb, we apply the Shape Up methodology for product development. Our emphasis is on small, senior teams that embrace constraints, focus on craftsmanship, and deliver outstanding results. Key principles guiding us include continuous product discovery, valuing small teams over large ones, balancing fixed appetites with adaptable scope, deeply understanding our tools, integrating product with marketing, and prioritizing immediate impactful work over long-term plans.
Integration of Disciplines
We recognize that improving student wellbeing requires seamless integration of technology and content. Unlike many edtech firms that separate platform, content, and design teams, at Wellio these disciplines are unified under product to enable holistic solutions.
Team Composition
- Chief Technology Officer
- Two additional senior Product Engineers
- Designer
- Head of Product
You will collaborate closely with co-founders and customer-facing teams to ensure every code change directly addresses user needs by staying closely connected to customers.
Expectations for Success
- Develop comprehensive expertise in our codebase and business domain within one year
- Lead the delivery of multiple major product features
- Enhance development practices through code reviews and detailed documentation
- Establish scalable patterns and practices to simplify our monolithic code structure
- Serve as a trusted contributor in technical and architectural decisions
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is deeply experienced in Ruby on Rails and passionate about creating meaningful products. You enjoy solving complicated technical challenges and derive satisfaction from seeing your work positively impact customers. You prioritize clean, maintainable code but acknowledge that in a startup environment, pragmatic progress often takes precedence over perfection.
You maintain a positive, curious, and constructive approach toward challenges, focusing on exploring solutions rather than obstacles. Pragmatic compromise and balancing technical limitations with business goals are among your strengths. Mastery or significant familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools is expected to increase team efficiency as we grow.
Geographically, you can be based anywhere in Australia. Although our offices are located in Melbourne and Sydney and you are welcome to work there, remote working is fully supported.
About Wellio
