Principal Security Engineer

Overview

The Windows Security division at Microsoft is seeking dedicated security professionals who continuously acquire new skills and will focus on offensive security, engineering, and mitigation strategies to safeguard Microsoft Windows products and devices. This team is tasked with ensuring the security of Windows client and server operating systems, which are utilized by billions globally every day, including in enterprise environments.

Key activities include conducting security design and code reviews, performing penetration testing, conducting vulnerability research, and creating systematic defenses to address security threats within Windows, maintaining the highest security standards and proactively countering cyber threats. This role demands technical expertise and hands-on involvement to enhance the overall security of operating system platforms.

Role Responsibilities

• Develop reusable tools and agents to accelerate and standardize the quality of security reviews.
• Conduct security reviews of features and code, identifying defects and architectural risks using custom-built and automated tools.
• Serve as the primary security liaison to teams developing cutting-edge Windows products and technologies.
• Detect security weaknesses across critical OS components such as network protocols, security functionalities, and Microsoft device ecosystems.
• Apply a comprehensive and updated security knowledge base to create innovative protection mechanisms.
• Engage with external security communities and researchers to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.
• Partner with product teams to reinforce security measures and effectively communicate the strategic business importance of security investments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's or Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline with combined relevant experience (Master's plus 4+ years or Bachelor's plus 6+ years in security or related domains).
• At least 2 years of experience discovering vulnerabilities within operating systems and/or native (C/C++) applications.
• More than 5 years of experience in software or security engineering roles.
• Proven track record in security research, specifically in vulnerability identification and exploitation techniques.
• Experience in bypassing operating system security mitigations and exploiting bugs.
• In-depth familiarity with the architecture of Microsoft Windows.
