Principal Group Engineering Manager

Overview

Microsoft's TEX organization is seeking a Group Engineering Manager to lead Planner engineering at the IDC Hyderabad location. The Planner team delivers AI-driven task and project management, collaboration, and business continuity solutions at global scale, supporting products like Planner, Visio, and deep integrations with Teams Meetings, Channels, Loop, and compliance services such as Purview.

This team handles mission-critical, customer-facing services that enable modern workflows for individuals, teams, and enterprises. It plays a key role in Microsoft's strategy to provide AI-native productivity features, including the Project Manager Agent, while ensuring stringent reliability, security, privacy, and operational standards.

As Group Engineering Manager, you will steer technical, personnel, and operational aspects within a large global team of over 100 engineers, including multiple engineering managers and principal individual contributors. You will oversee the engineering roadmap, architectural decisions, and project execution for critical services in coordination with senior leadership and counterparts in Redmond.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product, design, and stakeholders to set and implement engineering strategy and product vision centered on AI-powered project and collaboration experiences.
• Own and direct the technical roadmap and system architecture to guarantee scalability, resilience, cost efficiency, and enterprise compliance.
• Instill a culture of engineering excellence through best practices for secure, maintainable, high-quality code, including rigorous design and code reviews.
• Establish delivery planning and execution rhythms for predictable releases, effective dependency management, and successful worldwide launches.
• Promote CI/CD automation, telemetry, and observability to support zero-touch deployments and strong live-site health monitoring.
• Lead security hardening, privacy, accessibility, and AI safety strategies, including threat modeling and compliance enforcement.
• Balance immediate operational needs with long-term platform improvements, especially addressing critical service incidents and reliability matters.
• Drive live-site excellence through proactive monitoring and automated mitigation across distributed systems.
• Build and nurture high-performing engineering leaders and teams via coaching, mentoring, and career growth facilitation.
• Foster an inclusive, innovative organizational culture that partners effectively across geographies and collaborates with senior leadership to influence global outcomes.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field and at least 8 years of technical engineering experience with programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; or equivalent experience.
• Must be able to comply with Microsoft's security screening protocols, including a mandatory Microsoft Cloud background check every two years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field plus 12+ years of technical experience coding in relevant languages; or Bachelor's degree plus 15+ years of technical engineering experience; or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years managing engineering teams or leading complex technical programs with cross-team and senior stakeholder collaboration delivering large-scale, mission-critical systems.
• 4+ years of experience managing engineering managers.
• Strong foundational expertise in distributed systems and cloud service design.
• 8+ years experience designing, developing, and operating highly available, scalable cloud services on platforms like Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Experience incorporating AI/GenAI features into developer workflows and customer-facing products on a large scale.
