Role Overview

The Principal Data and AI Governance Advisor position at NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) offers a unique opportunity to shape the governance practices of Data and Artificial Intelligence across the organisation. This pivotal full-time role is based primarily in Palmerston North, with options at Wellington or Auckland offices and other locations under consideration. The candidate will focus on establishing strategic governance frameworks that foster responsible innovation while safeguarding public trust and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement NZTA’s comprehensive enterprise-wide Data & AI Governance strategy and target state.
• Develop policies, standards, controls, and operating models that balance fostering innovation with responsible use.
• Define accountability structures for data ownership, stewardship, and AI oversight within the enterprise.
• Integrate Māori data sovereignty principles into governance decision-making and frameworks.
• Provide guidance and influence for key programs, digital platforms, products, and AI-related initiatives.
• Enhance governance maturity through assurance, risk management, and capability development.
• Manage the selection and ongoing advancement of governance tools employed across NZTA.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate approaches governance as an enabler to innovation, adeptly translating complex regulatory, ethical, and risk-related requirements into pragmatic, actionable strategies. Experience working at an enterprise level with the ability to influence senior leadership and navigate ambiguity is essential. Bringing together teams and stakeholders around a cohesive governance vision will be a critical aspect of success in this role.

Qualifications and Experience

• Extensive leadership experience in Data Governance or Data & AI Governance within large, complex organisations.
• Proven track record in creating and embedding enterprise governance strategies, frameworks, and operating models.
• Deep understanding of responsible AI, data stewardship, metadata, data lineage, and quality management.
• Strong knowledge of privacy, security, compliance, assurance, and risk management principles.
• Demonstrated ability to influence executive-level stakeholders and facilitate organisation-wide cultural change.
• Experience in setting up governance forums and establishing clear accountability for data stewardship and ownership.
• Proficiency with governance tools, controls, monitoring, and reporting mechanisms.
• Knowledge and application of Māori data sovereignty principles.
• Excellent strategic thinking, systems analysis, and interpersonal relationship management skills.
