Role Overview

Join the Royal Mail team in Kirkwall as a Postal Delivery Driver based at the Kirkwall Delivery Office, KW15 1AA. This role involves a fixed-term contract with a working schedule of approximately 32 hours and 5 minutes per week, spread across several days from Monday to Sunday, typically between 09:45 and 16:45. You will deliver letters and parcels by van and on foot, maintain customer relations, and actively contribute to timely postal deliveries in your community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sort mail and parcels at the delivery depot
  • Carry out postal deliveries on foot and by driving a Royal Mail vehicle within the local area
  • Develop positive relationships with customers and provide exceptional service
  • Perform duties outdoors under all weather conditions

Working Conditions and Schedule

This fast-paced position requires physical endurance, including walking distances up to 12 miles daily and managing heavy mailbags (10kg+). Your shift schedule includes rotation and some weekend work, including Sundays at the Kirkwall Delivery Office. Delivery routes and hours may adjust depending on operational demand.

Candidate Profile

  • Possession of a valid full manual UK driving licence with up to six penalty points, registered under your current name and address
  • Capable of passing a driving assessment and driving a Royal Mail van daily
  • Physically fit to walk long distances, climb stairs or hills, and lift heavy mailbags
  • Reliable, self-driven, organized, and able to maintain resilience under pressure
  • Customer-oriented with a strong commitment to delivering excellent service
  • Comfortable working independently and exposed to outdoor environments
