Job description

Role Overview

The primary responsibility of a pilot is to utilize expertise and knowledge to safeguard the vessel from collisions, groundings, and other maritime hazards by offering precise and timely navigational guidance to the ship’s master. With the master’s consent, the pilot may take charge of navigation and maneuvering the ship while within pilotage zones.

Key Duties

  • Navigate and maneuver vessels safely within port boundaries, prioritizing the safety of the ship, its crew, and the environment.
  • Ensure efficient and secure docking, undocking, and shifting of vessels within port limits.
  • Maintain readiness by establishing operational contingency plans in accordance with good seamanship principles.
  • Collaborate with the master by sharing professional ship handling skills and in-depth local knowledge to provide an effective service.

Performance Indicators

  • Maintain a high ratio of jobs per pilot relative to actual shipping demand.
  • Strive to eliminate delays altogether.
  • Keep thorough incident and accident records.
  • Participate actively in meetings including monthly safety sessions.
  • Demonstrate willingness to work beyond regular hours when necessary.
  • Efficiently manage assets including tugs.
  • Accurately complete reports and job observations.
  • Implement and comply with OSHAS, ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through quality service delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Possess STCW Class 3 certification or an equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 12 months’ sea-going experience on foreign vessels.
  • At least 12 months' experience as a tug boat master required to qualify for a Master Port Operations.

Required Knowledge

  • Shift systems and work scheduling.
  • Relevant maritime legislation and regulations.
  • Risk management and occupational safety practices.
  • Quality management frameworks.
  • Understanding of statutory and regulatory bodies.
  • Marine operations and services protocols.
  • Familiarity with Merchant Shipping Act, MARPOL, IMDG code, and SAMSA port marine operational rules.
  • Corporate governance and business performance concepts.
