Job description

Overview

Join Banyule City Council as a dedicated Payroll Specialist to deliver precise, compliant payroll services and enhance employee experience through trusted guidance and process excellence. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to lead payroll processing improvements and collaborate across departments to support organizational and community goals. The position is initially a temporary secondment starting as soon as possible, covering a team member’s absence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily payroll operations including accurate processing of timesheets and wage payments.
  • Interpret employment agreements and provide clear advice to staff in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Ensure strict adherence to relevant legislation, the Council’s Enterprise Agreement, and internal policies.
  • Maintain comprehensive payroll documentation, procedures, and ensure data accuracy.
  • Assist with testing and implementing updates to the payroll system using Civica software.
  • Complete routine processes such as salary accruals and leave liability reporting with accuracy.
  • Provide detailed payroll data for budgeting, grant applications, WorkCover claims, superannuation, and other financial obligations.
  • Contribute to budget planning by forecasting payroll expenses and analyzing payroll data.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least three years’ experience in a payroll specialist capacity or a closely related position.
  • Proficiency in managing end-to-end payroll functions, including processing wages, higher duty allowances, back pays, Single Touch Payroll (STP), superannuation, and WorkCover.
  • Experience with payroll systems and databases, specifically Civica.
  • Strong background in administering payroll for large employee groups along with knowledge of employment law and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities to address payroll issues efficiently.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to provide accurate information and advice.
  • Understanding of accounting principles and how payroll operations integrate with financial reporting.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Completion of a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is mandatory.

  • Salary range from $101,202.68 to $110,025.50 per annum plus superannuation, commensurate with experience.
