Role Overview
The Payroll Officer will be a vital member of BDO's finance team, reporting directly to the Payroll Supervisor. This position supports the payroll processing for over 2,800 employees across multiple Australian states, including NSW, QLD, SA, VIC, and WA. The finance team operates across various locations throughout Australia and is currently undergoing significant transformation.
This opportunity is ideal for someone passionate about managing the complete payroll cycle and keen on continual process improvements within an excellence-driven team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct complete fortnightly payroll processing including verification of input data, obtaining approvals, and finalizing payments
- Create and update employee hire records and manage ongoing employee data
- Handle termination payments ensuring alignment with legal requirements and company guidelines
- Prepare and audit payroll adjustments including bonuses, remuneration changes, and retroactive payments as requested by the business
- Collaborate with People & Culture, Finance, and other internal teams to confirm payroll accuracy and address payroll inquiries
- Oversee the payroll communication inbox, respond promptly and professionally to employee questions, and escalate complex matters when necessary
- Ensure adherence to company payroll policies and procedures while suggesting and supporting process optimizations
- Perform various administrative payroll tasks and other responsibilities as required
Required Skills and Attributes
- Capability to work independently whilst being a cooperative team member
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills oriented towards customer service
- Strong attention to detail with a strict approach to confidentiality
- Highly organized and proactive, able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines effectively
- Willingness and enthusiasm to learn and adapt within a dynamic and fast-changing workplace
- Analytical problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous improvement efforts
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience in payroll functions within medium to large organizations
- Experience using payroll software; Workday familiarity is preferred but not essential
- Knowledge of payroll legislation, awards, and enterprise agreements is advantageous
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Relevant certifications or qualifications in payroll, finance, or business administration are beneficial though not mandatory
