Job description
About the Role
The Parking Officer position at Byron Shire Council offers a dynamic work environment where no two days are alike. Working as part of a team, you will patrol various roads, parks, and public spaces throughout the Shire to ensure parking laws are applied consistently and fairly, aligning with Council policies and legislative requirements.
This role suits individuals who enjoy being active outdoors, resolving issues, engaging with the community, and maintaining composure under pressure. While enforcement is a key responsibility, much of the role involves assisting residents and visitors by answering queries and clarifying parking regulations. The role also requires significant driving between locations, so comfort with extended periods in a vehicle is essential.
Working on a rotating shift schedule that includes Mondays through Sundays, public holidays, and weekends is mandatory.

- Regularly patrol assigned areas within Byron Shire to enforce parking regulations.
- Investigate community parking concerns and respond to enquiries.
- Issue infringement notices compliant with legislation, Council policies, and procedures.
- Keep detailed and accurate records, reports, and enforcement documentation.
- Utilize handheld technology and other systems for inspections and infringement processing.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and communicate courteously with a diverse public.
- Work autonomously while positively contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Adjust to shifting priorities and make prudent decisions in a fast-moving operational context.
- Assist with preparation of legal documents and participate in court proceedings when necessary.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Possession of a current unrestricted manual driver’s license.
- Proven experience in customer service roles.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Capability to work independently and effectively manage competing demands.
- Comfort and confidence in using computers, mobile devices, and handheld technology.
- Familiarity with Australian Road Rules.
- Completion of SEINS (Self Enforcing Infringement Notices System) training or willingness to complete it within one month of starting.
- Availability for a rotating roster across all seven days including weekends and public holidays.
- Ability to spend extended time working from a vehicle and adapt to interacting with diverse personalities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in parking enforcement, compliance, regulation, or related enforcement roles.
- Possession of a Traffic Control Ticket.
- Experience working with infringement or regulatory management systems.
Employment Details & Benefits
- Full-time, 12-month term contract (38 hours per week) working a 9-day fortnight with potential for extension.
- Remuneration aligned with the NSW Local Government State Award ranging from $1237 to $1434 per week full-time equivalent, inclusive of applicable weekend and public holiday rates.
- 12% employer superannuation contribution.
- Uniform supplied.
- Annual salary reviews to recognize performance and development.
- Supportive team environment fostering mutual assistance.
- Employee Assistance Program providing four counseling sessions annually.
