Position Overview

This recruitment is for an Oracle Database Administrator role based in New Zealand, working in a fully remote capacity. The successful candidate will be responsible for expert database administration and technical consulting, managing complex Oracle database environments spanning versions 10g, 11g, 12c, and 19c. The role entails significant accountability for database upgrades, migrations, performance tuning, high availability setups, backup and recovery operations, and managing engineered systems. This position offers the chance to engage with modern cloud environments and tackle intricate infrastructure and database technical obstacles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert administration and support for Oracle databases (10g, 11g, 12c, and 19c) ensuring system stability and high performance.
  • Operate and maintain Oracle Engineered Systems including Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) and Exadata platforms.
  • Plan and lead database upgrade initiatives including hands-on execution of migrations to Oracle 19c.
  • Design and carry out database platform migrations minimizing service disruption and safeguarding data integrity.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and implement tuning solutions across Oracle databases.
  • Manage backup and recovery strategies leveraging RMAN for disaster recovery readiness.
  • Ensure high availability of database systems through Oracle RAC, Data Guard configurations, partitioning, and compression techniques.
  • Use Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control tools for monitoring, management, and troubleshooting.
  • Support operating systems underlying database environments, with system administration proficiency in at least two of Linux/OEL, Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX.
  • Contribute to consulting projects with implementations, troubleshooting, and upgrades across client engagements.
  • Provide accurate effort and resource estimates, deliver work on schedule, and maintain meticulous technical documentation.
  • Develop practical solutions to complex technical challenges through analytical thinking and creativity.
  • Collaborate effectively within distributed and fast-paced consulting teams.
  • Maintain flexibility for occasional non-standard business hours support in response to client project needs.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Minimum of 10 years’ hands-on experience as an Oracle DBA, proficient with Oracle 10g through 19c.
  • At least 2 years’ direct experience with Oracle Engineered Systems, specifically Oracle Database Appliance and/or Exadata.
  • Proven track record of executing database upgrades to Oracle 19c and managing complex migrations.
  • Strong mastery of Oracle RDBMS architecture, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced expertise in tuning Oracle database performance.
  • Expert knowledge in RMAN-based backup, recovery, and disaster-recovery procedures.
  • Experience with Oracle RAC, Data Guard, partitioning, and compression technologies.
  • Proficient in utilizing Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control for database operations.
  • System administration skills for at least two operating systems such as Linux/OEL, Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving mindset with practical and innovative solutions for complex technical issues.
  • Capability to estimate efforts accurately and meet project commitments.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic consulting environment, including occasional after-hours effort.
  • Effective team collaboration skills within distributed teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Management, or relevant field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Prior experience working with Oracle databases in cloud environments is highly advantageous.
  • Comfort with remote work while engaging collaboratively across geographically dispersed colleagues and clients.
