Ophthalmology Technician

Overview

The Ophthalmology Technician plays an essential role in assisting ophthalmologists and eye care professionals with diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with eye conditions. This position requires technical proficiency, knowledge of ophthalmic procedures, and a compassionate approach to patient care.

Patient Care

• Carry out initial ophthalmic diagnostic assessments including visual acuity tests, tonometry, visual field evaluations, and refraction according to established procedures.
• Prepare patients for eye exams and procedures by providing explanations, gathering medical histories, and ensuring their comfort.
• Perform advanced ophthalmic testing such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, ultrasound imaging, and visual field analysis to support diagnosis and monitoring.
• Assist in contact lens fittings by taking measurements and guiding patients on proper usage as part of vision correction treatments.
• Help triage patients to prioritize those with urgent eye conditions for timely ophthalmologist care.
• Administer prescribed eye medications, such as drops and ointments, and instruct patients on proper application techniques.
• Organize follow-up appointments, coordinate referrals when necessary, and convey test results and treatment plans to patients under the ophthalmologist's supervision.
• Support ophthalmologists during examinations and treatments by arranging instruments, equipment setup, and patient positioning.

Patient Education and Support

• Identify patient educational needs and collaborate with relevant departments to meet these requirements.
• Inform patients about their eye conditions, treatment options, medication usage, and post-treatment care to enhance compliance.
• Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and their families during difficult times.
• Ensure patients comprehend discharge instructions and follow-up care protocols.

Team Collaboration and Communication

• Coordinate patient care by working closely with physicians, nurses, and the wider healthcare team.
• Maintain effective communication with colleagues to facilitate smooth transitions and achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Documentation and Record Management

• Accurately document test results, patient details, and treatment plans in electronic medical record (EMR) systems for review by healthcare providers.
• Comply with legal and regulatory standards related to patient documentation and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Safety and Infection Control

• Ensure ophthalmic equipment is clean, calibrated regularly, and functioning correctly to guarantee patient safety and accurate results.
• Strictly follow infection control practices to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
• Implement safety procedures to safeguard patients, staff, and visitors against accidents.
• Identify, report, and address safety hazards and defective equipment within the healthcare setting.

Professional Growth

• Keep up to date with the latest advances in ophthalmology technology, procedures, and best practices through ongoing training and workshops.
• Pursue professional development opportunities such as seminars and certifications to enhance skills.
• Maintain competence in all required areas and hold current licensure and certifications.

• Assist the unit’s Head Nurse by undertaking additional work-related responsibilities as needed.

Required Skills

• Comprehensive understanding of ophthalmic anatomy, typical eye conditions, diagnostic procedures, and use of related equipment.
• Experience with ophthalmic imaging and interpreting results effectively.
• Proficiency conducting various visual assessments including visual acuity, color vision, and depth perception testing.
• Ability to assist patients with mobility challenges or special needs during eye examinations.
• Familiarity with surgical ophthalmic procedures, sterile techniques, and handling surgical instruments.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; compassionate and effective in interactions with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues.
• Competence in using ophthalmic instruments, medical equipment, and electronic medical records systems.
• Capability to work independently while adjusting to changing patient requirements and environments.
• Meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills suited for fast-paced clinical settings.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is required.
• Licensure or membership with the Saudi Council.
