OpenShift Platform Engineer

About the Role

This opportunity is a contract position spanning 9 months. As a Platform Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to support, maintain, and enhance Westpac New Zealand’s OpenShift Platform as a Service (OPaaS), which operates on dedicated bare-metal infrastructure across both production and non-production settings.

Collaborating within the OPaaS squad, you will manage hands-on platform administration, offer operational support and automation, and provide expert guidance on Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, platform services, and their related tools.

Your Qualifications and Experience

• Demonstrated recent or current practical experience administering Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform v4.15 or later — expertise at the platform administration level is crucial, beyond just application user familiarity.
• Deep understanding of Kubernetes components such as pods, namespaces, operators, RBAC, ingress, routes, storage, scheduling, and troubleshooting workload issues.
• Experience with running OpenShift on bare-metal or similar enterprise-level infrastructure, managing worker-node lifecycles, capacity, resilience, and hardware dependencies.
• Solid Linux/RHEL administration skills including shell scripting, systemd, SSH, and working knowledge of container runtimes like Podman.
• Proficiency in automation via Terraform, Python scripting, and familiarity with GitOps methodologies and source-control workflows.
• Hands-on experience with GitOps and related deployment tools such as Argo CD, Helm, Kustomize, Jenkins, Bitbucket, or GitHub Enterprise.
• Working knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, including DNS, load balancing, and ingress strategies, with experience using tools like F5 BIG-IP and Infoblox.
• Competence with monitoring and observability platforms including Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, and Alertmanager.
• Understanding of platform security measures such as RBAC, secrets management, compliance scanning, and vulnerability mitigation using solutions like HashiCorp Vault or CyberArk.
• Ability to work effectively within an Agile squad environment, utilizing tools like Jira, Confluence, ServiceNow, and Microsoft Teams to handle work assignments, incidents, change management, and stakeholder communication.

Preferred Additional Skills

• Experience managing Dell PowerEdge hardware, including iDRAC, firmware management, and hardware expansion planning.
• Knowledge of OpenShift Data Foundation, Container Storage Interface (CSI) drivers, or enterprise storage integration techniques.
• Familiarity with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management, Advanced Cluster Security, and Red Hat Hybrid Cloud Console platforms.
• Exposure to Red Hat Developer Hub, DevSpaces, Red Hat Service Mesh, or self-service platform patterns similar to Backstage.
• Relevant certifications such as Red Hat Certified Specialist, Red Hat Certified Engineer, or equivalent Kubernetes/OpenShift credentials.
