Job description
Role Overview
This position focuses on installing, configuring, maintaining, managing, optimizing, and securing open-source database environments. The individual will support vital databases and collaborate with business, development, DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams to maintain database availability, performance, and security.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support for PostgreSQL and other open-source databases including MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, and Redis.
- Manage cloud database platforms such as AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL, and Azure Database.
- Oversee and resolve issues with Oracle GoldenGate replication.
- Offer critical system support including participation in on-call rotations.
- Design and uphold high-availability solutions, replication setups, and disaster recovery configurations.
- Perform installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and migrations of databases.
- Monitor database performance and conduct optimizations.
- Conduct capacity planning and manage resources effectively.
- Develop and implement backup and recovery plans.
- Ensure synchronization between active-active and disaster recovery environments.
- Automate administration tasks using scripting, configuration management, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD tools.
- Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders on projects and emerging requirements.
- Administer database user accounts, permissions, and security measures.
- Document configurations, operational procedures, and best practices.
- Report updates on support activities, projects, risks, and challenges to management.
- Adhere to information security policies to safeguard data assets.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in STEM discipline or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of five years managing PostgreSQL or other open-source databases in production environments.
- Deep understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, internals, and tooling.
- Experience with database replication, high availability, and disaster recovery techniques.
- Proficient in writing and tuning complex SQL queries.
- Familiarity with SAFe Agile methodologies.
- Experience operating within hybrid cloud environments, particularly Microsoft Azure.
- Solid Linux administration expertise (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu).
- Experience with monitoring solutions such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Zabbix.
- Knowledge of automation tools like Ansible and Terraform.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity to work effectively under pressure and collaboratively within a team.
Desired Attributes
- Certifications related to PostgreSQL, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Linux.
- Background in ITIL Service Management practices.
- Experience with JIRA and Confluence tools.
- Familiarity with DevOps and DevSecOps team processes.
- Exposure to multinational team environments.
- Knowledge of cloud database services on AWS RDS, GCP, and Azure.
- Experience with Oracle RAC, Grid, ASM, and Data Guard technologies.
- Awareness of Oracle Exadata and ZFS systems.
