Role Overview

The Online Editor, West, plays a critical role in the editorial process by meticulously reviewing and refining articles submitted by Canadian writers before publication. This position ensures each story complies with Canadian Press (CP) style conventions and meets journalistic standards regarding accuracy, fairness, and proper attribution. The editor acts as the final quality checkpoint, skillfully addressing structural, factual, grammatical, and stylistic elements to maintain content integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and edit content from writers across multiple Canadian regions including Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto under tight deadlines.
• Consistently apply Canadian Press style guidelines across headlines, body text, captions, and cutlines.
• Guarantee adherence to journalistic ethics by ensuring accuracy, fairness, balance, attribution, and correct sourcing.
• Conduct thorough fact-checking of details such as names, titles, dates, numbers, and claims, resolving discrepancies with authors before publishing.
• Enhance content clarity, tone, readability, and grammatical correctness without compromising writers’ voice.
• Identify and mitigate legal risks including libel or defamation, escalating issues as necessary.
• Create and refine SEO-optimized headlines and meta descriptions aligned with the brand's voice.
• Confirm all quotations, statistics, and third-party references are properly attributed and authorized.
• Collaborate with writers and section editors to promptly settle outstanding editorial queries prior to publication.
• Support the maintenance and evolution of internal style guidelines to reflect updates in CP style and brand preferences.
• Report recurring editorial challenges and training needs to the National Online Editor.

Required Qualifications and Attributes

• Minimum two years professional editing experience, preferably in digital journalism or online media.
• Proficiency with WordPress content management system.
• Strong command of Canadian Press style standards.
• Familiarity with topics covered including elections.
• Solid understanding of Canadian journalism ethics emphasizing accuracy, fairness, and legal considerations.
• Exceptional grammar, spelling, and proofreading capabilities, with the ability to perform under deadline pressure.
• Ability to thrive and adapt in fast-moving and changing newsroom environments.
• Experience with digital-first publications emphasizing SEO practices is an advantage.
• Comfortable interacting with remote writers across various time zones via CMS.
• Post-secondary education in journalism, communications, English, or a relevant discipline preferred.
• Knowledge of Canadian urban cultures and current affairs viewed favorably.
