Role Overview

The Meter Reader position reports directly to the Meter Services Supervisor and is vital in accurately reading and inspecting gas, electric, and water meters. The role entails extensive walking in outdoor conditions, excellent organizational skills, and flexibility to adapt daily schedules.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and special meter readings at customer locations for billing purposes.
• Complete assigned tasks within set deadlines, handle numbering of new services, and adjust routes as needed.
• Inspect meters for damage or malfunctions and report findings to supervisors.
• Evaluate and address unsafe conditions or clean meter boxes.
• Utilize various meter reading devices and hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, flashlights, gas detectors, and pumps.
• Follow printed materials including service orders, maps, manuals, and computer-generated printouts for guidance.
• Assist in training new meter readers as required.
• Walk extensively, occasionally covering distances up to 20 miles daily, in diverse weather conditions including rain, snow, heat, and cold.
• Exert physical effort moving objects typically weighing around 10 pounds, with occasional loads up to 50 pounds.
• Communicate customer concerns to appropriate departments and provide general service information when needed.
• Use communication equipment such as phones, tablets, or computers effectively.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum education: Some high school education; must be at least 18 years old.
• Experience: At least one year working in outdoor conditions. Meter reading training will be provided.
• Must hold a valid driver's license.
• Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and one year of meter reading experience.
• Strong multitasking skills with the ability to work independently and in teams.
• Flexible in daily scheduling and route management.
• Effective time management to complete daily reads efficiently.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to professionally handle dissatisfied customers.
• High attention to detail for problem detection and resolution.
• Physical readiness to walk long distances and cope with outdoor weather conditions.

Additional Requirements

• Mandatory drug and alcohol testing compliant with company policies and federal regulations for gas meter employees.

Compensation Structure

The role offers a hybrid pay plan combining a fixed hourly wage with a pay-per-piece system post-training.
