Role Overview

The Meter Reader will report to the Meter Services Supervisor and is responsible for reading and inspecting meters for gas, electric, and water utilities. The role requires extensive walking in outdoor settings, strong time management skills, and the ability to adapt daily work schedules.

Key Responsibilities

• Read utility meters regularly or for special requests, typically at customer locations for billing purposes.
• Complete assigned readings within scheduled cycles, assign sequence numbers for new services, and adjust reading routes as needed.
• Inspect meters, alert supervisors to damage or malfunctions, and address unsafe conditions or clean meter boxes.
• Utilize various meter reading devices for electric, gas, and water meters.
• Operate hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, flashlights, keys, gas detectors, shovels, pumps, and lid handles.
• Reference printed materials including service orders, maps, manuals, and printouts to assist in tasks.
• Assist in training new meter readers when required.

Work Environment

• Spend much of the workday walking or standing, sometimes up to 20 miles daily in varying weather conditions such as rain, hail, snow, or extreme temperatures.
• Regularly exert physical effort handling objects ranging from 10 to occasionally 50 pounds.

Customer Interaction

• Direct consumer complaints to appropriate personnel.
• Provide general meter service information to customers when applicable.
• Use communication tools such as phones, tablets, or computers for interactions.

Qualifications

• At least some high school education and must be 18 years or older.
• Minimum of 1-year experience working outdoors. Training in meter reading will be provided.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.
• Preferably possess a high school diploma or GED and 1 year of meter reading experience.

Work Location
