Role Overview
As a Mechanical Trade Assistant, you will collaborate closely with Rail Technicians to carry out inspections, servicing, maintenance, and repairs on rolling stock, depot equipment, and various mechanical rail systems. Your duties will include assisting with both scheduled and corrective maintenance tasks, such as removing, installing, and replacing components under the supervision of licensed tradespeople.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing tools, materials, and workspaces to ensure maintenance tasks proceed safely and effectively.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery within authorized limits.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the workshop, stores, equipment, and work zones.
- Document maintenance activities accurately through records, checklists, and support toolbox discussions, training, and ongoing improvement efforts.
Candidate Requirements
- Prior experience in practical workshop environments such as mechanical, automotive, mining, manufacturing, defence, heavy vehicles, or industrial sectors is highly advantageous.
- A strong commitment to safety, including adherence to work instructions, Safe Work Method Statements, workplace health and safety policies, and other procedural safeguards.
- Basic mechanical skills complemented by solid literacy and numeracy abilities, comfortable with reading technical manuals, procedures, and maintenance instructions.
- Possession of a current unrestricted driver's licence is mandatory; qualifications such as forklift operation, elevated work platforms, overhead crane handling, dogging, or first aid are desirable but not essential.
