Job description

Overview

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for ensuring maintenance activities are executed safely, on time, and according to quality standards in a manufacturing environment. This includes performing routine, corrective, and overhaul maintenance on equipment while adhering to safety, legal, and food safety (HACCP) protocols. The role includes coaching operators and technicians, planning maintenance activities, and using digital tools to optimize maintenance operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely perform all maintenance tasks on schedule, including those with legal implications.
  • Follow and enforce safety procedures during maintenance, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and minor intervention protocols.
  • Maintain equipment as per quality maintenance and food safety (HACCP) standards.
  • Conduct planned and corrective maintenance activities efficiently.
  • Coach and train operators and fellow technicians, supporting continuous learning and audits.
  • Handle machine tagging and detagging within assigned zones.
  • Identify and resolve equipment performance issues during routine inspections.
  • Participate in production shift handover meetings to understand Operational Performance Indicators (OPI) losses.
  • Manage change-overs and assist with fine-tuning machine adjustments.
  • Complete maintenance handover by tagging follow-up work orders as necessary.
  • Execute LOTO try-out procedures and maintenance beyond operator capabilities, alerting duty engineers if downtime exceeds 15 minutes.
  • Utilize downtime as an opportunity for skill development and operator training.
  • Conduct overhaul maintenance on assigned machines.
  • Prepare lists of critical parts prone to wear and tear; assist in identifying and sourcing critical spare parts.
  • Log maintenance work orders in the control system and update maintenance standards (HACS) when required.
  • Maintain workplace organization following 5S principles, including tools and documentation.
  • Drive reduction of Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) structurally.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with operations teams throughout maintenance processes.
  • Continuously improve troubleshooting skills by learning from maintenance colleagues and frequent failure cases.
  • Lead fault-finding, root cause failure analysis (RCFA), and 5-why investigations, including training and mentoring team members.
  • Lead and participate in Autonomous and Planned Maintenance (APM) initiatives (levels 0-5).
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document and follow up maintenance activities.
  • Adopt and leverage relevant digital tools to enhance maintenance work effectiveness.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent vocational education.

Experience and Skills

  • At least 4 years of experience in maintenance roles.
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of machinery.
  • Experienced in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and ability to conduct Autonomous Maintenance (AM) activities and operator training.
  • Proficient user of Windows, Microsoft Office, and Maximo software.
