Mechanical Estimator

Role Overview

The Mechanical Estimator is integral to the major projects estimating team, responsible for producing precise and competitive cost estimates, budgets, and bid submissions for complex mechanical construction initiatives. This position involves thorough analysis of drawings, specifications, labor needs, materials, equipment, and subcontractor quotes to formulate detailed project estimates that support project acquisition and execution. Collaboration with operations personnel, suppliers, and subcontractors is essential to ensure full understanding and accounting of project scope, risks, and costs.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform quantity takeoffs including data entry into estimating software.
• Prepare, review, and submit bid documents ensuring all requirements are met.
• Compile complete estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
• Produce takeoffs from incomplete drawings or documentation as needed.
• Apply appropriate correction factors by understanding labor variances across project types.
• Provide detailed labor breakdowns to aid budget formulation and project management.
• Develop budgets for prospective projects.
• Attend site visits, pre-bid, and post-bid meetings as necessary.
• Engage in turnover meetings with project teams to support planning and budget efforts.
• Build strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing.
• Craft winning strategies for projects and review final cost reports for historical data.
• Interpret client and design information thoroughly, ensuring inclusion of integral system components.
• Critically assess requests for proposals, preliminary designs, estimates, and proposals to support sound decisions with management.
• Adhere to deadlines and timing protocols as outlined by company estimating policies and meetings.

Qualifications and Experience

• Post-secondary diploma in mechanical or construction technology or related field; OR
• Extensive mechanical contracting trade experience (Engineering or CET credentials considered advantageous); OR
• Minimum of 5 years relevant Mechanical Estimating experience with proven expertise in organizing and preparing estimates and proposals for construction projects.
• Ability to collaborate with operations teams regarding scope clarification for change orders.
• Ability to coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to obtain appropriate pricing.
• Skill in managing multiple pricing tasks and change orders within tight deadlines.
• Strong knowledge of specifications, construction methodologies, and procedures.
• Exceptional communication, time management, and multitasking capabilities.
• Self-driven with eagerness to learn and engage in new challenges.
• Proficiency in mathematical calculations, interpreting construction drawings, contracts, cost coding, and work breakdown structures.
• Competency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with estimating software (Autobid Mechanical and Autobid Sheetmetal are advantageous).
• Experience with commercial and institutional projects is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

This new position offers an annual salary ranging from $95,000 to $120,000. Additional benefits include:
