Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team. This pivotal position focuses on ensuring the dependable operation of production environments through proactive validation efforts such as production load testing and chaos engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate the strategy for resilience engineering within Affirm, emphasizing production load testing and chaos engineering as fundamental engineering approaches.
  • Lead, develop, and guide a team of engineers dedicated to creating platforms and tools for secure production experimentation.
  • Collaborate with leadership in infrastructure, product, and security to integrate resilience validation throughout software development processes.
  • Define best practices for safely conducting system stress and failure scenario tests in live environments.
  • Design and oversee platforms that support controlled load testing and fault injections in production with robust safeguards such as isolation boundaries, approval processes, and automated rollback systems to protect customers.
  • Build comprehensive observability, traceability, and auditability solutions for resilience tests.
  • Identify system weaknesses through systematic load testing and chaos experiments to drive improvements in reliability.
  • Implement appropriate monitoring, alerting, and incident response tailored for proactive resilience validation.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to plan and safely perform production load tests and chaos experiments.
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to develop guardrails and frameworks supporting experimentation.
  • Provide reusable tools and standardized workflows to enable teams to adopt resilience practices.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to strengthen system fault tolerance and reliability.
  • Promote a company culture that embraces testing failures proactively to prevent real failures.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams focusing on reliability, distributed systems, or infrastructure.
  • Hands-on expertise in production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating large-scale systems.
  • Experience using chaos engineering platforms such as Gremlin or Harness.
  • Deep knowledge of failure modes in distributed systems, including latency issues, partial failures, and cascading outages.
  • Experience building or managing systems with strong safety features like isolation, rate limiting, guardrails, and audit trails.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies including AWS and Kubernetes as well as observability tools.
  • Proficient programming skills in languages such as Python, Kotlin, or Java.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to balance immediate business demands with long-term resilience goals.
  • Excellent communication and leadership capabilities with proven influence on engineering practices across teams.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary range in Canada: 181000 to 241000 CAD.
  • Equity participation program available as part of total compensation.
  • Health benefits fully covered for employees and their dependents, including medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Monthly stipends for technology, wellness, lifestyle, and family-forming expenses.
  • Competitive vacation and holiday schedules encouraging work-life balance.
  • Employee stock purchase plan allowing discounted purchase of company shares.
