About Affirm and Role Overview
Affirm is transforming credit by offering transparent and user-friendly financial solutions that let consumers purchase items immediately and pay later without concealed fees or compounding interest. We are looking for a highly experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team. This pivotal position focuses on enhancing the safety and stability of production environments by implementing proactive validation strategies such as production load testing and chaos engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Shape and promote the vision for resilience engineering at Affirm, prioritizing production load testing and chaos engineering as essential engineering methodologies.
- Manage and guide a team of engineers dedicated to creating platforms and toolsets that enable secure experimentation in production.
- Collaborate closely with infrastructure, product, and security leadership to integrate resilience verification throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Develop and enforce best practices for safe testing of systems under extreme load and failure conditions in live production.
- Lead the design and continuous improvement of platforms facilitating controlled production load testing and fault injection.
- Implement robust protections including isolation boundaries, approval mechanisms, and automated rollback systems to safeguard users.
- Construct tools ensuring comprehensive visibility, traceability, and audit trails for resilience experiments.
- Systematically identify weak points by conducting load and chaos tests and drive improvements in reliability.
- Set up tailored monitoring, alert protocols, and incident response processes specific to proactive resilience validation.
- Partner with engineering groups to safely design and execute production load and chaos tests.
- Work with infrastructure teams to establish protective guardrails for experiments.
- Support teams in adopting resilience practices by delivering reusable tooling, frameworks, and standard procedures.
- Pinpoint systemic vulnerabilities and lead cross-team initiatives to enhance reliability and fault tolerance.
- Advocate widely for the philosophy of 'test failure before failure tests you' within the company culture.
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated track record managing engineering teams with a focus on reliability, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- Direct hands-on experience with production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating large-scale systems under stress.
- Proficient with chaos engineering tools such as Gremlin, Harness, or equivalent platforms.
- Deep knowledge of failure modes in distributed systems including latency, partial failures, and cascading outages.
- Background in constructing or maintaining systems designed with strong safety measures like isolation, rate limiting, guardrails, and auditability.
- Familiarity with cloud-native environments, particularly AWS and Kubernetes ecosystems, plus observability technologies.
- Solid programming skills in languages such as Python, Kotlin, Java, or similar.
- Excellent problem-solving capabilities with an aptitude for balancing strategic resilience initiatives against urgent business priorities.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, evidenced by success influencing engineering methods across multiple teams.
Compensation and Benefits
This role corresponds to Pay Grade P and Equity Grade 7. New hires typically start near the lower end of the pay spectrum. Affirm maintains a straightforward pay model factoring in location, experience, and relevant skills.
The base annual salary for Canadian employees ranges from 181000 to 241000 CAD.
Additional compensation may include monthly stipends allocated for health, wellness, and technology expenses, as well as extensive benefits covering 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and their dependents. Eligible participants may also receive equity awards through Affirm Holdings, Inc.
Work Environment
Affirm embraces a remote-first culture, allowing most employees to work virtually within their country of employment. Roles adjacent to office-based functions may require occasional onsite work at assigned Affirm locations. A minority of positions remain fully office-based due to specific job responsibilities.
Additional Benefits
- Comprehensive healthcare coverage with all premium costs covered for employee and dependents.
- Generous flexible spending stipends supporting technology, food, lifestyle, and family-forming expenses.
- Competitive vacation and holiday allowances to support rest and rejuvenation.
- Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) offering discounted shares of Affirm.
