At Affirm, our mission centers around delivering transparent and reliable payment options without hidden fees or compromises. We empower customers to pay over time with clarity and fairness.
Role Overview
We are looking for a seasoned Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team. This pivotal role focuses on enhancing the safety and reliability of production environments by implementing proactive validation approaches such as production load testing and chaos engineering.
Responsibilities
- Formulate and promote the strategic vision for resilience engineering at Affirm, emphasizing production load testing and chaos engineering as integral development practices.
- Guide and mentor engineers developing platforms and tools that enable secure experimentation in production environments.
- Collaborate with leaders from infrastructure, product, and security domains to integrate resilience validation within the software development lifecycle.
- Implement best practices for safely pushing system boundaries and testing failure modes in live production systems.
- Architect, maintain, and evolve platforms that support controlled production load testing and fault injection experiments.
- Ensure strong user protections including isolation boundaries, approval processes, and automated rollbacks to safeguard real users during experiments.
- Create systems offering comprehensive observability, traceability, and audit capabilities for resilience testing.
- Lead initiatives to boost system reliability by identifying vulnerabilities through load testing and chaos experiments.
- Set up specialized monitoring, alerting, and incident response procedures tailored for proactive resilience testing.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to safely design and execute production resilience experiments.
- Partner with infrastructure teams to develop safeguards and guardrails around testing activities.
- Enable broad adoption of resilience best practices by providing reusable tools, frameworks, and standardized workflows.
- Identify systemic reliability issues and spearhead cross-team projects to enhance fault tolerance.
- Promote a culture emphasizing early failure detection, encapsulated by the motto "test failure before failure tests you".
Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams focused on reliability, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- Practical experience in production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating large-scale systems.
- Familiarity with chaos engineering platforms such as Gremlin, Harness, or equivalent tools.
- Strong knowledge of failure scenarios in distributed architectures, including latency issues, partial outages, and cascade failures.
- Experience designing or operating systems with robust safety measures like isolation, rate limiting, guardrails, and audit logging.
- Understanding of cloud-native environments (AWS, Kubernetes) alongside observability tools.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Kotlin, Java, or similar.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, balancing strategic resilience investments with urgent business priorities.
- Effective communicator and leader with a proven ability to influence engineering culture and processes across teams.
